“to cheese” a boss, a strong enemy in a videogame, usually means to exploit a certain mechanic or glitch in the game to make the fight substantially easier. In my example, you’d basically have the boss fall off the map for the victory.
Soulslikes are notorious for being very difficult games, so cheesing a boss could also mean that you’d use a bunch of consumable items, usually bombs and the like, to deal a lot of damage from a safe distance instead of engaging in melee combat.
I personally would class cheese as “unintended but not really a glitch”, like taking pot shots at a boss from a ledge where they can’t get to. Or indeed eating the energy equivalent of a nuclear bomb in calories because the game allows eating (=healing) while it’s paused.
I don’t think we’ve actually had that topic in a weekly thread. I can’t remember it, and I’ve just used the search function. Unless nobody in the whole thread used the word ‘cheese’, we really haven’t had it before.
It was more broadly about glitches. But, yeah, we definitely discussed a lot of cheese and especially the many ways gravity kills Fromsoft Bosses.
Also wtf? That post was 6 months ago! How time flies…
I would still argue that it’s a good topic for a weekly discussion. Depending on your definition cheese doesn’t always involve glitches. Also, since it’s been so long, we have quite a few new regular posters. As a cheese connoisseur I now also have quite a few I haven’t mentioned yet ;)
And yea, time sure does fly. I still remember when I started this community with barely a clue how Lemmy even works, thinking that I’d still be better off with game-specific communities vs. one combined community for soulslikes in general. We’ve got a lot of regulars here now - you being one of them, thank you for continued contributions - which is awesome. :)
Apparently I’ve even done it. I had the Advantage joystick for my NES, and on Blaster Master if I figured out that i could grenade the bosses and hit the pause button at just the right time and it would keep doing damage. So, yeah makes sense, just didn’t have the vocab. Thanks

Hope this makes sense :)

This would actually make for a good discussion topic for next week’s Weekly Soulslike thread. What’s your favourite Soulslike boss cheese?
I’d have to look it up, but I think we’ve had that before, actually

This is what I had in mind, posted by yourself even :D https://lemmy.zip/post/55625046

Thanks! This is an awesome community. Thanks for managing it :)
I’ll take it into consideration then! I’ve been having trouble coming up with topics recently, so I’m always glad to get suggestions :)

Yup, sounds like it! You’re welcome :)
