They love shit like this because it’s tangible, everything else they worry about is either statistically insignificant to the point most people will never see it or completely fabricated so the best they have is bottle caps.

Every time someone complains about bottle caps I think two things: they never saw how much small plastic pieces contaminate environment where people spend time relaxing and not taking the garbage where it belongs; they have really weird priorities in life.

Nah, they’re great. I’ve had to pick up bottle caps because they slipped out of my hand before.

It’s genuinely more convenient imo to have the caps attached to the bottle.

Isn’t that worse though because now it involves metal, which is much more energy intensive to recycle

Reasonably speaking the actual solution would be flip tops like you get on sports drinks. But presumably those are more complicated to manufacture which is why it’s not done.

Even if we’re for some reason melting down metal parts every time (which we don’t), metal is energy intensive to recycle, but it’s recyclable infinitely. Plastic is easier to melt, but only a small percentage of it is recyclable at all, and even that is only once. So all the plastic either gets burnt, or thrown out and ends up somewhere where it shouldn’t, like an ocean. Both cases are way worse.

Ideally these bottles are recycled by just reusing them for a new product, not melted down. I’ve used these bottles several times over for beer. There’s no need to replace them.

well 1) i’m not saying it’s better, just that the concept of an attached lid is not even remotely new and thus complaining about it is incredibly dumb, and 2) you wouldn’t recycle a bottle like that, you’d clean it up and just reuse it as-is, only having to replace the cork itself as the rubber gets too old.

That depends on the design. The most common one I encounter is fixed at two points and can’t be extended without some amount of tearing, so I just keep tearing. I’ve never been the sort to not put the cap back on the bottle when throwing it away so it’s a redundant feature for me.

That said, in the time since this new norm came in, I’ve lived in two different countries, one of which had signs saying to separate the cap from the bottle at recycling recepticles, meaning you had to tear them off.

Yeah, they are fixed at two points

But you don’t need to forcefully tear. Twist the cap a little bit, and one side breaks off. No force needed

Only have an empty bottle, so I can’t show it properly

They’re calling it woke because apparently it’s a directive from the EU. And in there tiny little brains anything that EU does is work. Accepting for a minute that they have no idea what the word means.

It is annoying, but you can also just snap one of the legs of the attachment point and then it’s not a problem anymore.

Anyone who’s ever picked up trash on a beach before knows how many goddamed bottle caps there are. And bottles without a cap for that matter. Those two stacks could combine to form a single stack with half the items. Half of the stuff to pick up. And picking up bottles is much easier than picking up a cap. Wildlife are less likely to mistake it for something eatable as well.

Yes I agree the caps can be a little inconvenient, but that’s well worth the practical end result in my book. There will always be assholes that pull of the cap. And bigger assholes still who throw their shit into nature instead of properly recycling or disposing it. But a large amount of people are trying to make our world a little bit better, or at least prevent it from going to shit as fast as it is.

These days people are so selfish and spoiled, even a tiny inconvenience is enough to make them behave like little children. It’s sad really.

Wildlife are less likely to mistake it for something eatable as well.

I made the mistake once of buying a string of C7-sized Christmas lights to put up on my house one year. Turns out squirrels around my house thought they were acorns or something, and literally chewed the bulb assemblies off the wire. They weren’t even up for a week before I had to take them down and trash them. Now I have rope-style and mini-icicle lights that the wildlife seem content to ignore.

Because I don’t like having a bottle cap dangling in my face when drinking, so it will be ripped off. Of course that has a 50% chance of leaving the tether attached to the rim so now you can stab yourself in the face while drinking. Now you have to rip/twist that off, too. Of course that bit can’t be reattached to the bottle any more …so into the natural microplastic cycle it goes. If they could at least fix the predetermine breaking point at the rim … but that would require a design by people with a brain.

It’s especially annoying with yogurts and smoothies. I have to lick the cap clean so I don’t make a mess when it’s dangling on my cheek, nose, or chin, whichever orientation is preferred.
