Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no. Why can’t we just have global F1 TV.
Region rights shit me so much since what I have access to is no where near the level of F1TV
Would a VPN get you access to F1TV or do they use some kind of VPN deterrent to region block their streams?
F1TV recently started to try to curb vpn use iirc, not sure how effective it turned out to be
I have never tried because I’d have to sign up to both and if it doesn’t work I’d be out of pocket, but if this is possible then I would be all in!
You can watch MLS anywhere in the world that Apple TV+ is available. It would undoubtedly be the same with F1.
Lol. Apple also axed local commentary, and was far more expensive than what came before it. Fuck. That!
Apple hired a bunch of prominent commentators from all across the sport. The broadcast quality was bested and they actually took an interest in the sport unlike ESPN. Bally’s (formerly the regional fox sports channels) was the only way to watch some teams, and Sinclair destroyed its market reach by
Apple is actually cheaper than what came before it. Previously to watch every game, you had to have ESPN 1&2, ESPN+(out of market only), Fox Sports 1&2, Univision, local Fox, and the regional channels (often Bally’s) and often there was no way to get replays on demand. That would easily run you $80/month. For $99/year ($79/year with an active Apple TV+ subscription) you get every regular season game, postseason, Leagues Cup, and Campeones Cup, replays, highlights, a red zone style nfl broadcast, plus a ton of extra content from the teams with zero blackouts. The only games not included are US Open Cup, CCL & CWC, and maybe some preseason matches and friendlies if any because MLS doesn’t hold those rights, USSF, CONCACAF, and FIFA do respectively.
Apple has raised the quality of MLS and made it accessible to everyone where Apple TV+ is available. You don’t not need an Apple device to watch it either.
I’d pay $80/year extra to be able to watch all the F1 stuff live and on-demand.
Me too! I’m already subscribed to F1 TV Pro
The broadcast quality is fucking dogshit unless you’re a fan of one of a few select clubs. It’s biased and no longer has any local ties with the clubs. Austin FC used to broadcast their games locally for free on the website. Now it’s paid, and the commentators suck.
You can still listen to local broadcast audio if you select it
F1 TV Pro > any other broadcast of F1
As an F1 TV PRO subscriber, I agree. I don’t think much would change from it if Apple were to be successful with this bid though. They put a lot of time and effort into making MLS successful, and my only complaint so far is the back catalog is a bit lacking, but that may be MLS’s fault.
Unless they purchase exclusivity rights then you won’t be able to subscribe to it.
Unfortunately I live in a country where F1 TV Pro cannot be purchased because of exclusivity deals and so I have to navigate the wavey seas to access it. They’ve been tightening up people’s abilities to stream the content non-legitimately these past few years. It’s been becoming more and more difficult; this year, if I wasn’t technically minded then I would have to fall back on to ace streams or those websites that share the stream with a shocking amount of adverts and other ‘fun’ things. I foresee that in the near future it’ll be even stricter and I’ll completely lose access to F1 TV Pro. :(
The annoying thing is that I’d quite happily be a paying customer… if only they would allow me to be one.
There is a webpage on F1’s website that shows which countries have access to what, when, and how long for.
My understanding is this would be a rolling pick up. Essentially Apple would gain more exclusive broadcast rights as old deals expired. As soon as rights are gained in countries where Apple TV+ is available then it would also be available for purchase.
Just don’t let Tim “wave” the flag again.
When I have a bad day, I rewatch that to laugh
“We think you’re gonna love it”
Oh god please no. Apple fucking sucks
I understand if you don’t like them as a company for some of their practices, but man, have you ever actually used Apple TV on a modern device? It’s genuinely the best streaming service out there (technically wise, not the library). As long as it’s priced okay I’m all for this, gimme that sweet sweet 4k50 Dolby vision F1 streams!
“Modern Device” aka Apple TV, AndroidTV, iOS or MacOS. No app for Android phones.
My Roku has AppleTV. They’re not as closed as you think.
My WebOS tv has an app, as does my PS4…
I do not trust apple to deliver at all. I also refuse to pay apple a cent till the day I die. Genuinely an awful company that I despise
I’m not a fan of Apple, but what makes you say they are “genuinely awful”?
Just curious.
Probably because of their anti-consumer practices, anti-repair, how they design products, cables, accessories, and service to maximize profit to the extreme, and their walled garden ecosystem designed to ward off competition.
This is literally word for word what I came to post. Good to see I’m not alone.
as a happy F1TV subscriber that would be my cue to hoist the jolly roger
I seriously hope this doesn’t go through because F1TV is brilliant and I don’t want it to change (although I still wouldn’t mind an Android tv client. I know there was one, but from my playstore location I can’t install it, so not sure if there still is a client. Also, I tried sideloading some apps, but those never worked. I just cast it from my homeserver now, which is fine).
I sideload F1TV on Andorid on Bravia TV with an apk from apkmirror and it works completely fine. I still don’t understand why they restrict it on some versions of Android TV.
I might have to do this. Chromecast is working for now but having the app on the TV itself would be better.
That would be a good way to get me to never watch F1 again.
@wes please no, i don’t want to have to find some way to pirate content because I’m not paying apple anything.
If I may ask, why did you tag OP¿? Is it some requirement of cross platform federation¿?
Maybe they’re on Mastodon?
Why does mastodon require tagging though¿? Is it some federation quirk¿?
I was responding to this post on mastodon at the time, now I’m using my lemmy account. When responding to a post on mastodon it does the tag just like twitter used to when responding to someone
I hope part of the deal is that Tim Apple gets to wave the checkered flag at every race.
And I hope you step on a piece of Lego every night. Now I have nightmares again, thank you very much…
They must NEVER get this otherwise no one except iSheep will be able to watch F1.
Tim can f right off!
Well if that happens I am out. I have plenty of other racing and sports to watch.
I’m just going to continue torrenting.
I don’t care about F1 sports, really.
However, this is yet another “force people to use our shit products” scheme, it should be illegal, period.
??? You are commenting on an F1 community😂
Yes, and?
I guess I’ll throw away my Fire TV, my Android phone, and my PC, so I can spend a small fortune to watch F1… or fuck that.
Most comments so far are negative but not really saying why. What would be different compared to now in your country? Or is it just a dislike of the company Apple?
Officially, I’d have to pay 28€ per month for some pay tv subscription to watch it. The amount of races I can watch (time zones; other appointments) during the season is probably 15 out of the 22 in the calendar. So with 336€ for 12 months and 15 races, I’d have to pay 22.40€ for each race I’m watching. That is totally ridiculous, so I’m watching random free streams I can find somewhere on the internet. Or I’m simply not watching at all, if there is no free stream available.
I don’t really see this getting worse with any other company or Apple. It could stay just as bad and I’m not paying anyone - or maybe get better.
Most comments so far are negative but not really saying why.
I currently pay ~5 € per month for F1TV (65€ per year). It’s unlikely that it stays that cheap with AppleTV.
Same for me, I love F1TV content and rather not have third parties involved. Especially a company whose products I avoid (mostly because my mindset is incompatible with their UX design).
I’d totally pay 65€ per year to watch the races! Unfortunately, the F1TV product is not available for me due to exclusive broadcasting rights by Sky. And they don’t have a F1 subscription, but only multi-sport-bundle at 28€ per month.
Why is it unlikely to stay the same price? Apple could possibly sell it at less profit to incentivize people to switch to AppleTV or other Apple products. Since F1TV has no other services they have to get the full cost out of the subscription and ads.
Also, 3 euro per race is pretty expensive already.
Giving Tim Profit-is-everything Cook exclusive rights to stream F1 is plain wrong in every single level. I’m saying this as an old time Apple fan who’s watched Tim’s business decisions betray users so many times.
Well for one F1TV is much cheaper than sky so the apple service might not be cheaper for us.
Secondly apple might bundle F1 streaming to apple TV and use that to push people towards adopting their ecosystem. This may result in a worse experience for Android and windows users(not to mention linux which I assume will have no official support at all)
Price and trapping F1 in Apple ecosystem (Apple TV works okay on Android, but that doesn’t mean the same would apply to F1).
Currently, streaming the races is an option that the TV broadcasters hold in my country. Which is completely free TV and I dont have to pay for it. If Apple gets a global streaming license, I cant stream the races via my TV broadcaster anymore.
Also, oligarchy sucks. There is no need for F1 streaming to be held by a big streaming provider of which there are only a handful who buy more and more content.
the fact that some people are referring to anyone who uses an apple product as “iSheep” should inform you of the quality of discourse to expect here
no thinking, just blind tribalism
28 euro is cheap as well! In the UK, you have have to have a full sky tv package plus the sport addon, you’re looking at about 50 gpb per month. And because it’s a full package it’s every month, so even in the off season. I use f1tv using some vpn trickery and that’s great but not everyone does that. Personally if this is a replacement for the sky monopoly I’m all for it.
Would be great to see Sky’s monopoly dismantled
Sky does not have global streaming rights. This would create an actual monopoly for Apple with a dedicated subscription and not even part of Apple TV+. How is that better?
From what i see on this thread, the English people are so traumatised by sky and their pricing that they aren’t able to think straight when they see something that could be an alternative to sky
UK Sky is a bargain compared to some other countries but if Apple copies the exact same model of add-on subscriptions as Sky does, I see zero benefit. I’d rather see non-exclusive rights and F1TV available everywhere.
Lol, that’s exactly my point. Alternatives should be available in the UK from F1TV or Apple, more competition reduces prices.
Plus Sky make you pay for football, and I hate contributing to overpaid footballers.
But if apple is the exclusive provider, then just like sky, they will have no competition and hence price it at whatever they want(exactly what sky does now). That is what everybody is pointing out to you and the other British folk
The company is reportedly considering an offer worth about $2 billion per year, which would eventually make Apple the exclusive streaming rights holder of Formula 1 racing.
The article makes that claim, that doesn’t make it true. Why would Liberty do that? It would mean even fewer people having access
make Apple the exclusive streaming rights holder
That’s what apple are considering offering. That doesn’t mean Liberty would bin F1TV.
Advertisers want more eyeballs on their branding, not fewer
Bernie always wanted it on free to view for that exact reason. He only did the sky deal because they made a dedicated channel that got 10m+ viewers, 4m more than when it was on free to air
Would this mean an iDevice will be needed to see f1?
I can’t watch films I’ve purchased on iTunes on android. Apple really are toxic for the consumer.
For those about to chip in to shill, apple tv+ works in a browser but is devoid of my purchase library because Apple.
Current Apple TV app works normally on Android TV. The issues are mostly QOL like you can’t rent movie from the UI etc.
Afaik you can get an Apple TV app and subscription on Android, Android TV, and from your browser. Never tried the service myself though.
Righto, thanks, doesn’t seem outlandish now :D
No lol you just make an account with any email and pay for the sub like any other streaming service.
MLS works pretty well, honestly. The interface for the app is kinda shit but they have worked out the kinks of sports streaming really quickly.
