Hi all, I installed GTA 4 Complete Edition from Steam. The first time I tried playing after installation it worked flawlessly but has been giving me this error ever since. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and I have tried using a different Proton version only to get the same error again. I am on Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon with 13th Gen i7-3700K, RTX3080 Ti and 32 GB RAM. I haven’t been able to find any help on Proton DB, hoping somebody here might have some idea. And I apologize if this is no the right place for this post, please let me know where I should post it. Thanks!

You need protontricks and the numeric game id.

    From a terminal, run

    protontricks game_id winecfg

And it will pop up a config window for the proton instance for that game. From there, you can tell it to pretend to be windows 10 instead of win7. You should only need to change it once. (Well, maybe again if you change proton version, or maybe not. I’m not sure how steam manages its wineprefixes)

Thank you so much. This worked like a charm but now that the error is gone it tries to launch the Rockstar Launcher but crashes without any error messages.

If you go into the game’s preferences in steam, you can modify the launch command to enable logging:

        PROTON_LOG=1 %command%

Then when you launch the game it should put a log file in your home dir. That will hopefully give a clue as to what the problem is.

Appears it should work pretty well according to ProtonDB

    https://www.protondb.com/app/12210?device=pc

You might need to install ProtonUp-QT and grab GE-Proton and set the game compatibility mode to “Proton Experimental GE-Proton”

There are also suggestions of downgrading the game version to remove the launcher (Im assuming the launcher does the windows version check)

And this user’s problem/solution sounds identical to yours

I needed to switch to windows 10 support, while firtst launching it said that windows 7 and 8 was no longer supported.

To fix: in protontricks select GTA 4, Select default wineprefix, Run winecfg, A window should now pop up, at the bottom In Windows version select Windows 10, select Apply and OK Even if you see Windows 10 already selected reselect it and press OK.

    Then it worked perfect.

You might need to install ProtonUp-QT and grab GE-Proton and set the game compatibility mode to “Proton Experimental”

If you’re installing proton ge, you should set compatibility mode to proton ge. Proton experimental is Valve’s experimental version of proton, not GE.

Not doubting you - I thought experimental referred an additional compat layer you select via Proton UP?

I believe the experimental option is always there in steam, even if you’ve never used proton up. It just contains experimental features that valve hasn’t put into a regular release yet.

Linux mint tends to use packages that are older but more stable than some distros. Have you tried using steam’s flatpak which might be more up to date?
