Summary

The Trump administration proposed requiring green card applicants already legally in the U.S. to disclose social media profiles.

Critics, including civil rights groups, call it a violation of free speech and privacy rights, warning it could disproportionately affect Muslim and Arab applicants and stifle dissent.

Public feedback has been overwhelmingly negative, with many citing First Amendment concerns.

The proposal follows controversial deportations and immigration crackdowns.

So… We already know that meta (for example) is tracking the hell out of everybody who has their crappy apps etc. We’re now going to see mandatory social media usage so that meta can become the thought police on behalf of trump. Really??!

Next the social security recipients, anyone who wants a tax break… Health insurance applicants and recipients and basically anyone who ever needs anything from the government.

“Hand over your green card, we can’t have americans here who don’t support our great tech companies by not having an accepted social media account”.

      There, problem solved.

Guess you’ll need to buy me a computer and pay for my internet connection.

        Not quite.

        • “Oh well, no social media account? No green card (nor rights in general)”

I’m saying this as a joke, but I think we’re not far from seeing this happen. I’m pretty sure China’s social score will be implemented in the US in short time.

Yeah as someone who deleted my Facebook and Twitter accounts years ago, and only uses Lemmy now, the people who are most concerned with how I can exist without said accounts are my MAGA family members. They would love the sort of black mirror style “everybody rate each other” system
