If they can really make an affordable model this would be great. Have talked to too many talented developers that shy away from learning/working on iOS projects solely because of how expensive the necessary hardware is. Really hope something comes of this!

I find it odd that Apple offers 4 iPads with a screen between 10.2" and 11," so the clearly see that size as popular, but the smallest screen size mac is 13.3," and they’ve had smaller sizes in the past such as the 11" MB Air, the 12" MacBook, etc.

I think this is a great play. I got the M1 MacBook Air when it was on sale for $699 at some point around a year ago now. A cheaper model even with maybe an A16 chip or something could still do well for basic processes.

I somehow think their idea of Low-Cost is going to be just staying at 999, whilst making everything else more expensive.

Every year the same headlines. Not gonna happen. And you know why? Because apple is seen and marketed as a luxury product, basically a veblen good. They’ll never make a properly cheap laptop, and doing a laptop that’s $200 cheaper than the current offering is just pointless.

I think they could do a 12” MacBook no-suffix with basically previous gen M-chips (or even A-chips?) and a air-cooled set-up so as to not have to over-engineer cooling. Using cheaper shit and fans would degrade the base MBA M1 experience just enough to make it cheap, I guess.

I mean, I don’t know how you get something that the M1 MBA doesn’t already do. Just whack $200 off the price of the MBA M1 and save yourself the trouble. Maybe make them cool, fruity colors and call the chip the M1X or some shit.

Apple should really do this. Apple is too expensive and many young people never try an apple product and convince themselves apple products are bad and unattractive.

If apple can release a MacBook for 500$ (8gb ram and very low storage) they can convince an entire generation that even though apple hardware is great what actually makes a difference is that apple gets software, music, product support and many other things better than Microsoft and google. Apple will make money on services and brand loyalty.

A 13 year old that gets a 500$ MacBook will turn into an 18 year old with a 900-1200$ MacBook Air and at 25 the 1800$ MacBook Pro and at 35+ you’re looking at a really lucrative customer. Get them hooked while they’re young.

Edit: I want to make it very clear that I am mostly talking about the European Union where Apple is a weak player
