I really wish they’d work on tvOS for actual TVs. Like Roku TV’s.
Or just have an HDMI stick for Apple TV. It’s so dumb having those full size pucks on every TV in the house.
If you allowed tvOS on a 12.9 when connected to a home pod now we are talking. My 12.9 is basically my tv at this point as I don’t have room for a massive set and the miniled screen is great for video.
You can pair two HomePods for stereo. Large or mini.
I use Noise Cancelling headphones, but if I had more space I’d look into that.
I was thinking more like the iPad attaches to an iPad like the echo they mention in the article.
What would that do for you that an iPad doesn’t already running iPadOS?
Multi channel audio thru homepods. It’s only possible via atv
Almost like a media viewer meant for controller and content specifically. Almost like a Front Row to your content…
Isn’t the successor to front row the apple tv?
Oh how I miss Front Row dearly. That was awesome during high school/college having Front Row while watching video and listening to iTunes connected to a projector and speakers.
I wish they wouldn’t bring it back. It’s was such a good feature that has not been replaced. I think most newer Mac ppl dont even remember: but all Macs use to come with remote and you could enter a content only mode called front row, had this little curtains animation opening like a show, which like a super early version of Apple TV.
Then when the battle for the living room heated up in 2000’s they ditched it going in the direction of Apple TV. Also it was cheaper to ship without the remote and make ppl buy an Apple T$.
I miss it was amazing. I could have tons of stuff on my computer, and my mom could just pick up the remote hit the button and instantly have all the latest photos, media, music available in this super simplified media juke box mode.
So Google Nest Hub Max
You know, if Apple cared about e waste, they would release a version of this that people could load onto older iPads.
Of any generation
this
This isn’t surprising. I would bet real money that they have macOS running on iPads somewhere in their R&D labs. I would kill for that to happen.
I’d be good money that Apple (secretly) have a uniform locked-down OS (based on iOS) running on Macs. All other OSes are locked down – watchOS, VisionOS, HomepodOS, iOS, iPadOS.
macOS is the only OS that isn’t locked down. I think Apple are working to switch us over to a locked-down OS in the coming years.
Eh I doubt it. We use Macs for software development work and will need to drop them completely if they moved to something that resembles more iPadOS. Almost all the web developers I know are using Macs too, they would lose a massive market
Great, now add on device CarPlay as well so I can use my phone as a CarPlay unit on my bike.
“HomePad”?
Apple, you’re getting so close to what I suggested years ago…
Make something like the Echo Show 10, but instead of a fixed screen, put a MagSafe mount on it. Put MagSafe on iPads. Allow any iPhone or iPad with MagSafe to go into a HomePod mode where it charges while having essentially has the same features and functionality as the Echo Show 10, but you can take your phone/tablet with you when you leave.
Apple is so close to being there with the HomePod and with StandBy for the iPhone.
Sounds like you want a Google Pixel Tablet.
I was hoping Google would do this with the pixel tablet.
The dock would be its own Google assistant speaker. And pixel 8 phones would have those pogo pins
So HomePod that’s also an iPad dock where the iPad takes on a new interface when docked?
So basically a Pixel tablet? Because that’s the whole gimmick of Google’s new pixel tablet, that it comes with a speaker+charger dock that makes it like a giant Google home hub.
Sort of, but go back years earlier to release it ;) and also it’s about the dock (HomePod), not the tablet. It should work with any MagSafe iPhone or iPad. The Pixel Tablet, as the name implies is about selling a tablet that has a docking speaker accessory.
It’s a subtle distinction, but what Apple should do is sell a HomePod, with current functionality, that has a MagSafe mount, and then add MagSafe to iPads and in software allow HomePod (Standby) mode.
If you watch the MKHD review of the Pixel Tablet, you’ll see it’s a favorable review, but he wishes there was a better tablet and a better dock. If Apple did what I’m suggesting, they’d simply have a line up of low, mid, high end HomePods with MagSafe and BYOD would cover whatever level of device you wanted to use with it (or none at all as it would still function on its own via Siri).
100%! I have an iPad and HomePod mini in my kitchen and it’s so annoying having the hardware right there but the experience sucking
