Zidane’s idol Francescoli. Leo’s idol Aimar. Always River.

Leo may not say it, but the way he speaks about that era of River, he clearly reaaaally liked River as a kid.

there’s something about Messi’s voice that make him sound so innocent, i can’t explain it but he seems like he would still be nice honest man even without the success

So i saw the whole video at the end these guys exchange there world cup jersey’s. While Zidane was signing and writing a message on his jersey, Messi was mesmerized seeing it and and said “What a shirt!”.

Very subtle, but massive props to whoever was in charge of both men’s wardrobes

Messi wearing a shirt with the modern three stripe logo, and the Messi logo while Zidane wearing the classic Adidas logo, I’m pretty convinced this isn’t coincidental

Two very different generations, two absolute legends

Do you really think that Zizou is a top-five Real player in history? I’m genuinely flabbergasted by this as a Barça fan, with the likes of Raúl, Casillas, Pirri, Gento, Míchel, Hierro, Paco Gento, etc. around. You’re a massive club with a massive history, so I really can’t understand elevating someone like Zizou to the top five. He was in Madrid for five seasons where you lot won one league title with Zizou as the pièce de résistance of an insanely expensive project. For the record, when Zidane announced his retirement, this is what he said: ‘I don’t want to start a third year knowing I won’t be able to do better than I’ve done in the past. I don’t want another year like this one, or even the one two years ago… it’s been two years now that I haven’t been playing like I want to.’ Zidane was, in the bigger picture, a disappointment in Madrid. Even, and perhaps especially, to himself.

What? Real barely did anything in the years Zizou was there? He was there for five years as part of an insanely expensive project where he was basically the pièce de résistance, and not only did they only manage one league title (and one Champions League title), but they immediately bounced back after Zidane retired. It’s some wild revisionist shit to claim Zizou a top-five legend in Real, and I’m saying this as a Barcelona fan.

This subreddit gets very weird about CR7. Sure he might be a bit of a dickhead but he is easily a bigger legend than Zidane for Madrid.

My favorite quote in the interview is “Scoring a goal in the World Cup final is the best thing ever, right? Both of us can say that”

But I was told the world cup was a 7 game tournament 😭

a 7 game tournament without a mistake tho you can come back if you make a mistake in CL but you never come back if u make a mistake at world cup beside this all nations play at that tournament you can’t just play with the same strategy

I think there’s more nuance to the 7 game tournament thing.

Realistically, the World Cup needs to be fit into a period of 2-3 weeks for logistical and tv rights reasons. And as well, a single elimination tournament format is not the best way to judge the quality of a team. There are a lot of ways the format is a poorer judge of the question “which country is best at soccer” than, for example, a more traditional league format would be.

Another example is that giant slaying is fun in single elimination domestic cups, but the first division is always a better indication of team quality.

None of this takes away from winning the trophy.

lol Messi said about the number 10 and what it represents “We all believed we were the different player, even though we weren’t.” I think with these two it’s pretty safe to say that they were.

it’s nice to see such legends be so humble though. as good as they were, without the other 10 players on the pitch (and oh boy, there were some names) they wouldn’t achieve the heights they did

I think it was Mascherano who said: “The thing about Messi is that he doesn’t realize he’s Messi.”

He’s just a player, a football fan, like any other who would be in awe of Zidane.

The other funny thing is that Messi is getting the point in middle age where he doesn’t seem so much younger than Zidane anymore. They were still playing at the same time at some point.

Feel like Zizou is the player that undoubtedly makes even the best footballers feel star struck. He has been a great asset to Real Madrid’s recruiting. A lot of their big signings have pointed to his phone call playing a huge role in their decision.

Even Becks mentioned in his documentary how much he loved the moment when Zizou planted the seed in his head and that’s a player who had easily the biggest brand name in sport at that time.

Zidane apparently has a certain aura and presence that people really feel when around him. Not even necessarily due to his skills as a player or his status in society. I think even if he had been a regular average joe he would be one of those people that exude leadership and confidence.

So there’s a good chance Messi is under that spell even if he sees himself as equal or superior.

He’s dead sexy and has sort of resting, “I am very displeased with this situation” face. Also, of course, a god of the game.

Plus, Messi is rather shy and easily becomes bashful in social situations, especially ones where he is the focus, and they are going to talk about how great he is. You’d think he’d get used to it, but he never seems to. When he went up to get his award for the FIFA Best Player in January, and the audience kept applauding he said, “you’re making me more nervous.”

you can just see Messi is honestly kinda flustered

and when he’s gonna be in Zidanes position hes gonna be just as much of an inspiritaion to the players playing then
