He got chewed up and spat out by three different toxic clubs/fanbases. Not surprised if he’s lost his spark.
Only losing your job after a 13 game run that featured one measly win and included a drubbing from your closest rivals and a 5-2 defeat at home to Watford is not being ‘spat out’. That’s being given every opportunity.
Celta, Everton and Dailan?
There is something incredibly rotten in Celta Vigo. You get the feeling they have underperformed for years, and should be higher in the table. But their signings in the last few years has been mostly awful, and some internal issues with players doesnt make it easier. Having sold their two best players, and building the team around a 36 year old, now it feels like the team is just bad.
A lot of the explanations for Monchi’s downfall apply even more starkly to Luís Campos.
Interesting. What do you think are the reasons for Monchi’s downfall? Or if you have any articles or links you could share.
He was one of the first DoFs to properly embrace data analysis and built an impressive scouting team and process. Some of it was reportedly still quite rustic though (as an example, one of his favourite methods was simply building a best XI of each league and going from there - I’ve heard this discussed on a podcast, probably one of the Athletic ones?) and I think as times moved on other teams caught up through more sophisticated uses of data and their own creative recruitment strategies.
They had a good squad in 2021-22 with Coudet, but many of those players are gone and they replaced them poorly imo. Cannot rely on a 36yo Aspas any more!
Real sliding door moment for Rafa refusing to leave Everton to come back to us post takeover. I’m glad he didn’t. But he must regret that move now
Benitez sets up the team well, but he’s been awful at game management this season
Yeah, he can get match going into his favor 80 minutes in, but they collapse in the ending of the games.
Collapse is putting it lightly, they’re usually winning and then compeltely capitulate.
Losing to a late winner against RM is nothing to be ashamed of but being a goal or even 2 goals ahead into the 80th minute and still losing is something else.
The changes he made against us almost bordered on arrogance, and played a pretty significant part in our comeback. They should’ve won that game but due to the bad in-game management from Rafa they didn’t.
If DCL/Doucoure didn’t get injured there’s a good chance Rafa would still be our manager now. Funny old game football
Most overrated manager of all time. Bar none.
Any manager who’s wins a cup with your disaster area of a club should earn respect.
It is crazy how he is still defended. Average with Napoli and Newcastle and almost acceptable with Chelsea - sprinked in there is ruining one of the best Inter sides of all time, taking a European quality Everton side to a relegation battle, failing in China and now showing his true colours again in Spain.
Yikes, I had no idea how much of an impact VAR has had on their season so far.
How Benitez’s triumphant homecoming turned sour
1 win in 13 games, there, I wrote the article for you BBC. No need to thank me!
Sometimes I wonder why anyone reads anything at all.
That’s the third paragraph in the article.
Perhaps there’s more to the stories of the people in the game than just numbers.
Yes, like old scores to be settled at the Dell. Scores like 1 nil and 2 all that have happened in previous years.
Considering your username, I shouldn’t have to be the one posting this.
There is one maxim of /r/soccer.
If a headline has “How” in the title, there will be at least one snarky comment in the replies oversimplifying the point of the article.
It’s pretty common all round this site. Trying to be smart by being deliberately stupid.
Pedants are the most irritating contigent of our species.
As opposed to those who seek Reddit fame?
Never sought it, i wouldn’t know.
You’re a reddit mod lol
I’m not a mod and never have been. Never will be, either.
There’s not a bigger insult in the world, so you better be careful throwing out that accusation.
Waiting for the Liverpool and Newcastle fans to flood in and start pointing the finger at Celta Vigo fans any minute now…
