Sounds like we’re in the same boat. But that’s exactly why I’m asking.

There’s a story that Joseph Goldstein (Buddhist meditation teacher) has told.

He was leading a retreat not long after 9/11. (If I recall correctly, it was within days after 9/11.) He was leading a group in “metta” (translated “loving kindness”) meditation. It involves wishing good things (“may you be happy, well, safe, peaceful, and at ease”) for yourself, then for a friend, then someone you don’t have strong positive or negative feelings about, then an enemy/antagonist, then all of them together, then all sentient beings.

He said that retreat-goers objected that they couldn’t possibly wish good things for people like those who hijacked the planes or for Osama Bin Laden himself. All they could have for those people in that moment was hatred. And they asked Joseph how he could possibly ask them to have any positive wishes for “the terrorists”.

I mean, I don’t know how many of you remember 9/11 or the years closely following. But to say the U.S. lost our collective minds is no exaggeration. And I would hope most here agree that that xenophobic fervor led only to terrible things. (Including Trump’s presidential terms.)

Joseph’s response was “at least I should think that you all should be able to wish for them to be free of hate”.

In a way, it seems weird that it was 25 years ago. In another way, it’s weird to think it was only 25 years ago.

What I’d love to see even more than that is some kind of pigment cartridge system. You’d use natural, unpigmented filament and the printer would inject pigment in different mixtures as it prints. Just seems… I dunno. More efficient?

I remember seeing a YouTube video (that I might search for and find again if I remember) where some company had developed (and probably patented) an approach that involved inkjet-coloring as it printed. I remember the colors looked pretty pale and washed-out looking. Not vibrant the way I would have hoped. But the approach might be one that could be improved on. 🤷

So, this is not me arguing, just trying to understand, and so far I have more questions than answers:

• Can you give me specific instances of this?
• Did you report it?
• If you did report it, what did you give as your “reason” in the report? (I ask just because mostly the reports we get aren’t very specific with their reason and sometimes it’s hard to discern even what specifically they mean. I don’t personally review every thread that comes through !fuck_ai@lemmy.world, so it’s not like I go into these reports with context to go off of.)
• You say “explicitly”. As in, mods have made statements in reference to what you’re talking about?
• How frequent are these instances? A running pattern, or a once-off?

Honestly just any more context you can give me will be helpful.

Love the anti-Flock sentiment, but do note that if you use these in the real world, you will probably face legal repercussions. Maybe lesser ones than if you actively damage Flock cameras. But it’s not a “cops who use Flock cameras hate this one weird trick” thing.

Yeah, I’m also planning to switch to PostmarketOS. I was running Ubuntu Touch when my carrier changed things to where my phone didn’t work as a phone without VoLTE. Ubuntu Touch doesn’t support VoLTE on my Pixel 3a so I reluctantly switched to stock.

It wasn’t until after I switched to stock firmware that I found out that PostmarketOS has experimental support for VoLTE on my device. I’m hoping “experimental” is good enough for my purposes, but we’ll see when I get around to doing it.

Took me a while to even figure out vaguely what you were talking about here. I use DuckDuckGo exclusively for search. (And I use DuckDuckGo for search mostly because they let me turn off LLM BS.) I wasn’t aware they offered a browser. (I assume what you’re talking about is the DuckDuckGo browser/app, right? Not, say, search or LLM services or whatever.)

When you say “browsing and tracking through my apps”, what do you mean exactly? Did you have the impression that having the DuckDuckGo browser installed on your phone will prevent other apps from tracking you somehow? Or are you saying that by using the webapp of whatever particular service through the DuckDuckGo browser rather than an official app, you avoid tracking built into the app? (If that’s what you’re saying it at least sounds plausible. But if you’re thinking having DuckDuckGo on your phone will prevent, say, Google Play from tracking you (assuming Google Play is installed on your phone), I can’t see how that could be the case. But I also wouldn’t think DuckDuckGo would make the claim that it would. Unless you and DuckDuckGo know something I don’t.) Or when you say “browsing and tracking through my apps” do you really mean web trackers? (Or maybe apps can interact with web stuff through the browser in ways that I’m not thinking of.)

I guess what I’m asking is what specifically is the privacy claim related to DuckDuckGo that you’re asking the veracity of?

Whatever the case, it’s entirely possible that the particular claim you’re asking about isn’t true, but that it’s also not a claim that DuckDuckGo makes nor that they’d expect people to think about their products and so isn’t any particular reason for your coworker to dunk on DuckDuckGo.

It’s unfortunate to see world leaders lean into the criti-hype. But I guess it’s better than world leaders leaning into just plain-old hype.
