World News@lemmy.world•Shock as German conservatives open door to cooperation with far-rightEnglish
0·2 years agoIt might be misleading to say they were the first out of Africa. I think there was 100,000 years or so between homo sapiens leaving Africa and arriving in Australia.
Also I think they might have been able to walk due to lower sea levels at the time.
Finally it’s pretty likely that homo sapiens (in this case aboriginals) hunted mega fauna to extinction.

1·2 years agoThis doesn’t sound terrible?
In Australia, it feels like the inverse. We generally have conservative governments until they do something particularly abhorrent and lose government for a term.
We’re presently enjoying our once-in-a-decade progressive government term and sadly I feel they have squandered their term. They seem determined to ignore the core responsibility of making life better for everyone and instead waste political capital on fanciful notions like banning sheep exports and frivolous changes to the constitution.

News@lemmy.world•Welcome to the femosphere, the latest dark, toxic corner of the internet… for women
1·2 years ago“Femcel” influencers urge their followers to give up on gender equality and use men for financial gain
I’m kinda struggling with the math here.
You might be able to date several men simultaneously and get some free dinners and maybe trinkets and baubles, but it would seem difficult to get much more “financial gain” than that given that most men don’t have enough money to say, rent a posh apartment for their side dish.
The only way to really get “financial gain” is through marriage, which of course is a game that has been played since the dawn of time, but is not particularly engaging content in that you need to be married for several years to be able to separate and carry off a significant chunk of the marrital assets.
Surely, if you had the requisite appearance and guile for any of this the quickest and easiest pathway to financial gain would be taking money from incels on onlyfans.
Disagree. In each of the cases you’ve cited the term “stick” describes the form of the subject, and no better term exists.
If small shafts of carrot were commonly called carroticles, then you couldn’t call one a carrot stick.
Clearly the object pictured in this post is an icicle. It is not an ice stick.

0·2 years agoWorse… making a public campaign to make biden withdraw, even if not successful, is a terrible idea.
Honestly, the worst possible thing for the left.
Not only a lame duck candidate, but public infighting to undermine support.

“seem” is the critical word there. Interacting with an LLM they do seem to be pretty clever.

0·2 years agoI strongly disagree.
I don’t think lemmy is necessarily an echochamber per se, rather its just a place where misinformation exists and opinions are manipulated.
Lemmy does use algorithms to show you the most engaging content, and there are absolutely bots and bad actors manipulating which content is prioritised.
The genocide Joe / vote abstinence thing was a very clear example.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do people still eat beef when we know it's terrible for Earth?
1·2 years agoForgive me, because I’m struggling to understand the linked information, but as someone with atherosclerosis this is an issue close to my heart (ha!).
I just want to make sure I understand you.
Your link to the european heart journal says that the causal link between LDL and ASCVD is “unequivocal”.
I think the WHO study says (amongst a lot of other complicated stuff) that replacing SFAs with PUFAs and MUFAs is more favourable than replacing SFAs with complex carbohydrates? The strong implication being (although I couldn’t see this exactly) that higher SFA intake contributes to heart disease.
