  • All things have a class character. In the PRC, surveillance is used to keep the people and the streets very safe. In the US or UK for example, surveillance is used to protect the property of the rich, and imprison poorer peoples. The only reason for skepticism, is because people see how these things are used against the people in the west, and not for them.

You can walk around in nearly any city in the PRC and feel completely safe, and the cameras are definitely a part of that. You can watch videos on youtube with westerners walking around at night in any given city in the PRC, and they’re stunned at how safe it is. Even from a liberal perspective, security and personal safety is liberty / freedom. From a proletarian perspective, its a very non-intrusive way to prevent street crime on a mass scale and make sure cities stay walkable and safe.

  • There are a lot of cities that fit that description, but being the US, you’re not going to find a lot of good options that have a decent overall quality of life, and aren’t incredibly expensive.

The best metrics to look for IMO are:

    • Bikability
    • Usable public transportation (< 10 US cities have this)
    • Good infrastructure / livability
    • Green spaces / parks

That leaves only a few options, all of which are expensive, but still far better than any other alternative:

    My top picks are:

    • San Francisco / bay area
    • Washington DC area
    • Boston area
    • Seattle area

I’ve lived in many of these places and can vouch for them.

I personally hate these below, because they’re grimy / filthy, have a ton of cops, and are filled with podcasters, but they do have good public transportation and a few other redeemable things.

    • NYC area
    • Chicago area
    • Philadelphia area

A+ post. There are hundreds of examples of this, but I’m reminded of the anarchist blanket rejection of cops, intelligence services, armies, borders, structured organization… no, proletarian states absolutely need all of these things to survive, but the way they function in a communist society is completely different, because they serve workers, and not capital.

People who grew up in capitalist countries have never seen how these things can manifest themselves in positive and healthy ways, so they ignorantly denounce their communist equivalents.
