mutt wasn’t a thing on the system where I learned pine. The first version existed out in the world, but the sysadmin probably thought it too new to install if they’d heard of it at all. We had three choices: mailx, elm and pine. pine granted access to newsgroups - the system had an NNTP server - as well as e-mail so it was a no-brainer for most of us.

It’s not clear whether you’re replacing some or all of the sugar with an artificial sweetener or not. Some don’t work for some people and some may be unsuitable for medical reasons, but there might be one or two that work.

FWIW, I’ve been putting saccharin in my tea for years now. Not dead yet.

To flog this dead horse just a bit longer, micro is nearly seven times the size of nano, and Apple are clearly doing it wrong. Pointing an old name at a new thing is fine as long as there’s backward compatibility, but a new name at an old thing that doesn’t support the same features is a disservice to the old thing, the new thing and the user.

Then you want nano -/ which uses the modern key bindings. They’ve been in nano for a while now.

For historical reasons, it doesn’t use them by default.

What extra features do you think it ought to have?

nano has supported syntax highlighting for a good long while, and for the Debian package at least, comes with a bunch of predefined languages in /usr/share/nano/*.nanorc.

I wouldn’t recommend it for large projects, but I’ve created and edited shell and Perl scripts with it plenty of times.

nano -x may be more to your liking then. Or nano -0 if you like being terrified.

Hints: Ctrl+X still works to quit. Alt-Z and Alt-X toggle the title and the help respectively.

You can also use the toggles in regular nano to hide one or the other if you’re bothered by them.

This tracks. If you think about it, any meal that might otherwise be the fourth method has transcended into being at least one of the other three.

Beware the term “liberal”. It has a political meaning that is pro-capitalist and arguably pro-“f— you, I’ve got mine”. It has picked up a secondary meaning of “left-leaning” / “progressive” that was almost certainly started by those further to the right, to whom anyone on their left is nigh-indistinguishable from a communist. (The distinction has bitten me on the behind more than once.)

My family is and has been a mix of political philosophies, so for the sake of harmony, we rarely discuss it.

I class myself as “leftish” because I have empathy for those who are worse off than myself, find that impossible to ignore, and so think that the state should support rather than punish or allow to come to harm, and I think that those who are capable of doing better should be made to provide that support. (i.e. tax the rich).

The difference between Gaza and Greenland is that Greenland is a European dependency (or colony if you prefer). This shouldn’t make a difference, of course, but it does.

I’ll grant you that if this drilling is to be on indigenous-owned land, there’s a possibility that there might be an unpleasant echo of Palestine.

It’s all going to come down to how far Denmark are willing to put up with Trump.

That’s why I made the recommendation in the paragraph after that. If they start murdering Greenlanders after the drill, and only the drill, is blown up, that’s likely to get Europe to call foul.

Sounds like the way to head this off is to clearly announce that any unsanctioned drilling will be taken as an act of war. Say that the moment any US drill cuts Greenlandic soil, the shooting will start.

And I’d recommend that the first shot be heavy artillery at the drill after a very loud and distinct warning, in English, to stand clear.
