You wanted to read the book, you were excited to crack it open, you came into it with good faith and anticipation… but you ended up dnf-ing it. Which book and why?
Mine was The Maid by Nita Prose. It was for my book club and looked like a fun murder mystery. Instead I got instant manic-pixie-dream-neurodivergent-girl vibes, and I noped out before the crime scene was even found.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I couldn’t even get halfway through the second chapter, the “humor” was some of the cringiest I’ve ever read
Likewise. My GR friends raved about it and said they were hooked. I thought it was cringe and couldn’t understand why they let an amnesiac be in charge of a multi billion dollar Earth-saving project
You have to get pretty deep in the book for the answer >!he didn’t want to go on the suicide mission but he was the best choice. They forced him into the rocket and gave him a drug that would cause amnesia when he awoke so he would focus on learning why he was there and what he had to do.!< but that’s a good criticism that says that for you the author left too many unanswered questions.
I genuinely wish I enjoyed it like with the Martian. I figured there was much more to it, but I honestly couldn’t keep going. If they made a movie, I’d watch!

I enjoyed the Martian, but half the jokes were based in 2000’s homophobia or racism. What made it worse was how hard Weir worked to force them into the dialogue, just giving the vibe he thought they were so hilarious they were worth stopping the whole scene for. Gay satellite hurhurhur

I also quit somewhere around the second chapter! The writing is so atrocious. No idea how this book is so popular.
