So question, is it worth getting a 5800x3D from a 5600x? I got a 7900xtx but the cpu is crippling its potential. Or should I just wait to upgrade to am5 down the line?

It might be better to upgrade to AM5 all at once. Since even a 7700X keeps up with the 5800X3D, you could just upgrade to AM5 when you’ve saved up the money. Ryzen 8000 might be a good option, since it’ll be 2nd gen AM5 and naturally more mature.

imho, sell the 5600x and get a 5800x3d. That’s a 200$ upgrade. Going AM5 means spending at least 450-500$ and DDR6 sticks are expected to drop by 2026. Skip DDR5 entirely.

depends on if you really want DDR5, and how much you are going to spend on a 5800X3D.

I have a 7800XT and the 5600X is hurting its perf in CPU bound games like Warzone and I’m planning to get either the 5800X3D or the 5700X3D if its a wider release.

I think I’m gonna get 5700X3D if it comes out and skip AM5 entirely. It will likely take another generation or two for the mid range GPUs to be bottlenecked by the Zen3D chips, by that point AM6(?) will come around.

I have often wondered if its worth upgrading my 5600X to a 5800X3D.

i spent like $400ish last year for a $20 x570 mobo that only needed a coin cell holder soldered back on and 32gb of ddr4 and a 5800x3d cpu, was coming from a x79 build so really felt like a good optionon a budget. replaced my 980 ti this year with a 6950xt for about $500, so i figure in about 4 or 5 years i will just jump to am5 or the now new hedt platform on the cheap! lol

the last amd system i had was am3 with a athlon II x3 rana cpu i unlocked to a phenom II x4 was my first all new parts build, then i had a new Haswell i5 set up for a while and sidegraded to a used x79 build with a xeon 1680 v2 i got locally for cheap that is still in use by a friend. amd has always been the better value though at least when buying new parts.

I hope that AMD continues this trend in the future where they keep the previous Socket around even after a new one comes out. They’ve made the AM4 platform an entry to budget PC builds that still have extremely good performance.

AMD has done a really good job with socket retention. With another SKU releasing in 2024, 7 years is a long time for support and if anyone stuck with Ryzen 1000 or 2000 until now, then you really got your money’s worth and just get a drop in upgrade.

Damn, amazing that AM4 is still getting new CPUs 6 1/2 years after launch. My B350 board I got on launch day is still going strong with a 5800X for my dad’s Flight Simulator system. Hopefully AM5 has a similar lifespan!

I suspect we’ll see the same for AM5, AMD is just fudging with the 2025 date in case the engineering doesn’t allow it. It’s pretty profitable for AMD, having a userbase like that.

Hate it when that type of shit happens with mobos. I have an intel board that wont boot in any other configuration but the Ram in the first and second slot -__- Not my main board, but one that I have. it’s a really premium board too so its a shame.
