I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn and haven’t gotten to the first main event, but it gives me this feeling like if I upgrade all my equipment now it might be for nothing. I know that is not the case, I looked it up, but what are some games that are the worst offenders? One I can think of is Aerith in the original FF7.
Not the same thing, but young me refused to play Majora’s Mask when I found out they took away my horse and all my loot from OoT lmao.
Wait. You refused to play a sequel to a game because you diddnt get to keep your progress from the last game? Or was it having to regain them throughout the game that you diddnt like
Idk if you are unfamiliar with majoras mask but the game has a 3-day cycle the ends with the cataclysmic destruction of hyrule by the moon crashing down, when the moon hits the town the main character is sent back in time to day 1 without any of their consumables, iconic items like your bow or hookshot are kept indefinitely as they each typically require a significant expenditure of effort to acquire
As a kid, the prospect of losing all your bombs/arrows/rupees/stuff every couple hours was kind of a punishing feeling
Just to add onto this idea, but MegaMan Battle Network. I prayed they would add a skip tutorial button but even the remaster forced you to learn how to select chips, so a combo, and shows you the sync feature. It’s why I didn’t buy the remaster. :( sad the game doesn’t check for a previous save from the other games and activates a skip tutorial thing.
I kind of hate that you can’t keep the gear/food that you pick up in the survival shrines in TOTK.
Youre right its not quite the same haha, but I mean it does take away everything that is consumable when you go back to the first day too. Which can be frustrating if you were, say, playing with little sleep and decide to travel back in time with over 1000 rupees only to watch that all go poof because you forgot to throw it in the bank and the last time you saved was over two hours ago…
I finally beat the stone temple and decided to rush over to defeat majora. Unfortunately as I warped to clocktower the was a lighting strike nearby and the power flickered. All progress lost. So many hours lost, I was pissed
Go at it from the perspective of a speedrun. Helps with getting over the hurdle of doing things again.
LoU2 kindve
Chrono Trigger. It’s entirely optional to revive the character 🤷♂️
Shinjiro in Persona 3 FES
Shadows of Doubt - hope you werent stashing anything in your apartment and taking too long on the tutorial mission m, cause now its gone!
Kotor - Want to level up a bunch before becoming a Jedi? Sorry, you wont be able to get all the cool force powers now!
Any games that do this without prior warning get put in the never play again folder in steam.
Supraland, In this game will be a moment where you lose all your powers, so you need to get it again
Cry of Fear after you escape the train and lose your bag
Endwar has unit promotions that were persistent between engagements in online mode. You would build up your recruits and turn them into veteran units who were pretty strong over a bunch of engagements. If your opponent beat a unit it would enter a downed state and it would take some time for the downed unit to get evac’d from the map. If your opponent chose to keep firing at the downed unit and got it’s health to zero before evac, they would be obliterated and go back to being a fresh, unpromoted unit. One hot battle could take you from a grizzled and terrifying commanding officer back to weenie hut Jr.
Starfield has a NG+ where you lose all your weapons and gear, and worse, the ship you’ve been slowly upgrading and building for the past 100 hours.
ZombiU, though that mechanic was part of the game
Not sure if this counts, but Deus Ex: Mankind Divided encouraged you to upgrade your implants to a certain level. If you do, though, they get turned off for a fight, leaving you severely weakened. If you don’t get the v2 upgrades, the boss you’re fighting can’t shut them off and you get to keep them for the fight.
Planescape: Torment - you lose all your team upon entering the final area, I could not finish the game as they had all the charms in their inventory (potions). I guess it’s time to finally replay this classic.
KOTOR kinda, level your character up as a scout, soldier, or scoundrel, and then around level 6-8 you become a Jedi. Not awful, but limited how much you could take advantage of either skill tree. I did a lot of runs in the game where I didn’t use any level ups until I made Jedi
omg i lost soo much materia with aerith. i just saved over my previous… and there was no going back. it wrecked me.
