Me and my husband are seriously considering leaving the US for Spain within the next 1-2 years. A few facts:

  1. I have Italian citizenship. Husband is US citizen.

  2. We do not have a marriage certificate but have been married for 5+ years and have the tax returns to prove it if that matters.

  3. We currently have a toddler and plan on having additional kid(s) in the future.

  4. I currently work as a paralegal at an international law firm which has offices in Spain, so we were thinking that the first step would be for me to request a transfer internally. Husband currently works at a US company but would find new employment (ideally with an international company) depending on which Spanish city I could be transferred to.

  5. We have a decent amount of savings, and would plan to leave within the next 1-2 years in order to save up a little more before leaving.

If anyone has a similar background and was able to move to Spain, I would love to hear about your experiences and any advice!

According to most EU country’s law, you and your “husband” are not married. I believe you either get married or have your child obtain an Italian passport which makes your partner the father of a EU citizen and should make things easier.
