What the actual fuck.
This show is good. Its got a few issues on an objective level such as some dialouge and some of the fight choreography and adaptation level some of which really stands out because of how crazy accurate they have been with everything else.
But the writing is mostly consistent, acting is on point. Visuals are mixed with amazing sets but the cgi is mostly fine and some character prosthetics dont look great.
As far as Adaptions goes this might be one of the most accurate true to source material adaptations ever made putting it alongside the likes of The Lord of the rings. And easily the best anime LA adaptation to exist
They made the silliness of the anime translate surprisingly well to live action. It really is a fun show, atleast for someone who is familiar with the content already. I want to see what another season will bring if they decide to keep up this effort!
Finished the first episode. I’m absolutely super positively surprised. I had 0 hope this would go well and it really works. Really digging the Luffy actor. I’m glad they didn’t try to make it realistic in any way.
Buggy was only on for 10 seconds in that episode but it was incredible.
About halfway so far and I’m pleasantly impressed. I think the crucial balance between manga/anime and live action has been done quite well. It’s also interesting to see how they’re condensing some arcs, removing entire sections to make it flow better. I can almost imagine someone making a cut of the anime that is paced the way the live action is.
As far as anime adaptations, this has been great. I really want to see how they’ll handle some characters like monster-point chopper, brook and Franky and whether they’ll actually run long enough to have us see arcs like WCI and Wano get adapted to live action.
Finished the series. As an adaptation I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought they handled lots of things really well. I think people watching the show but never having read the manga/seen the anime won’t get as much enjoyment but it’s still campy fun. I would be happy for it to receive a second season one day.
Character wise Luffy was good, Zoro was good, Usopp was good. Nami and Sanji didn’t feel quite right, although the Sanji back story was top notch.
I didn’t like Sanji’s actor. I didn’t think he captured Sanji’s character and he looked older than the rest of the crew.
I thought everyone else in the crew was pretty good though. They did a great job capturing their essence.
I think Usopp got the short end of the stick by essentially not doing anything worthy of being on the crew except for hitting a few pans with his slingshot.
I’ve only seen about 10 episodes of the anime and couldn’t really get into it. Really loved the adaptation though.
I watched the whole thing and I really enjoyed it. They really tried to translate it to people unfamiliar or uninterested in anime/manga and I think they did a great job of it. I think the flow was okay. 8 eps to cover all of East Blue is not much time.
I think the thing that got me the most hyped before it was out was Oda’s seal of approval. It’s a good series and they already introduced a heap of characters.
Once thing that keeps coming up in my small circle is the amount of screentime

have. I was okay with it - maybe it’s the Hollywood direction/way while others felt it detracted from the story. I didn’t event click

Django was left out of it. But there is still hope for him to pop up down the track.
I guess it’s difficult to balance when there are so many important characters that have been introduced and you don’t want to overwhelm new fans.
Edit: I’m bad at spoiler tags
I haven’t seen it yet (planning to start binging tonight), but I’m stoked at all the positive reviews online.
My wife and I are currently binging the anime series because she’s never seen it before and she wanted to have a sense of the show before diving into a live action adaptation.
We’re watching it in Japanese though. I lived in Japan for a few years, so watching anime in English is just weird to me. It loses some of the cultural context when it gets translated. I hope the English live action show isn’t too jarring compared to the original Japanese anime.
EDIT: I went to a convention cosplaying as Luffy a few years ago and I ran into Colleen Clinkenbeard. She was excited to see my outfit and I got a bunch of pictures with her, but I had no idea who she was. Found out later she was the English voice of Luffy. I’ve never seen One Piece in English, so I didn’t recognize her at all.
The netflix Japanese dub of the show is being done by the anime voice actors so you can do that if the default english doesnt work for you
So I tried watching it for my favorite moments if it turned out well… the Sanji backstory was good and the goodbye didnt hit me as hard. The Nami help me scene didnt hit as hard and the Arlong fight where he destroyed Nami’s room had different motivations this time.
The fishmen look ridiculous, tbh. So I hope newcomers enjoy this but it isnt for me.
I absolutely love this rendition! I’m two episodes in and I’m just trying to go slow and savor it. I hope it continues.
Watched the first two episodes. It’s really fun.
Even though I’d seen the trailers and I was expecting changes, I was surprised how differently Buggy is handled. It wasn’t bad though, just completely different.
Also I thought that Shanks’ actor didn’t feel quite right for the role.
I felt the same at first but by the end of it he had me sold.
How they massacred usopps nose ?
It’s out? Guess I’ll watch it today evening after work.
All of the episodes on day one as Netflix usually does or are they doing a weekly schedule?
Seems to be the whole thing

Watched less than 10 mins last night. Try again today. Seeing mihawk and shanks in real life is jaring. Looks bad but time will tell. I had low expectations going in. The anime works because it’s animation it doesn’t really lend itself to real life. It’s casrtooney and that’s the point.
I’ll try watch the whole thing
IM ABOUT TO WATCH IT WITH MY WIFE. I BE READY FOR THE GREATEST NETFLIX ORIGINAL
Everyone involved should be proud. This was a genuinely enjoyable series. I’d give it a 7.5/10. And this is a legit 7.5, not anything below 8 is garbage 7.5.
The acting was great almost across the board. There were so many characters like Zoro, Sanji, Buggy, Ussop, etc that were perfectly acted and cast or damn close to it.
The only big downsides were the CGI and some fight scenes. But they weren’t even terrible, just not as good as I would have liked. The Fishmen for example look primitive compared to characters like Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean, which came out in 2006.
