Hi all. I am upgrading my 6850k build to 14900k. At the moment microcenter has a bundle deal of Intel i9 14900K, MSI Z790 MAG Tomahawk WiFi, G.Skill 64GB DDR5-5600 Kit for $800. Is this a good bundle? I don’t mind paying more if necessary.
I will just comment on the power side since I looked into it recently. It appears to be one of the higher end msi boards, If I am understanding it correctly that msi board has 90 amp phases which is pretty high. Other z790 boards I have looked at have 60 amp phases but even those can handle a 14900k based on their website. So the msi board can definitely handle a 14900k from a power standpoint. Hope this helps.
All z790 mb can run 7200 as well as the cpu
I have the tomahawk with my 13700k it’s a nice board
14900k with this small 2 dim mb, only $300 z790i edge with 7600mhz ram xmp or oc to 7800mz to 8000mhz without spending $800 on a mb
The tomahawk is a very nice board. Go for it.
You will not be disappointed by this motherboard…
MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi has an I226-V ethernet controller which likes to drop connection at random times and this issue did not have any workarounds the last time I checked (about 2-3 months ago). So be prepared to buy another ethernet controller. Just google “I226-V issues”.
Unfortunately G.Skill memory sticks have issues with thermal pads. Not only do they not cover the power components on the PCB but some sticks have thernal pads that do not even contact some of the memory chips. Which results in these chips overheating during stress and eventual app/system crash. You can read about this here:

Also regarding a memory, that’s goes for all z5 or there were revisions where it was fixed? I just recently bought z5 6600 cl32, wasn’t able to find info about that problem in any of the reviews and that sucks - at least I could return them if I get any problems.

Well it seems that the MSI has used I225-V for the MAG Z790 Tomahawk MAX WiFi.

But I225-V is not problem-free either.

However for PRO Z790-A (MAX) which also uses I225-V there seems to be a workaround (in OP post & at the bottom):
https://www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/10fscft/intelr_ethernet_controller_3_i225v_only_reaching/
But this workaround may not work for everyone.regarding a memory, that’s goes for all z5 or there were revisions where it was fixed?
No idea. I’ve just seen reports about RIPJAWS S5 having thermal pads not contacting some memory chips. And also some posts here on reddit about Z5 high temps under stress (70-80C which is still within spec though).
Microcenter is the best. You won’t be disappointed. Rocking a 13700k same mobo and it’s absolutely amazing
I have 13900kf i choice Z790 Aorus Elite Ax Ice & corsair 7200mhz RGB kit.best performance at the moment
Go for a mb with more vrm. For the ram go for 6400
Z900-E and support for DDR5-7800 along with Gen 5 M.2
If you’re already spending the money on the chip, spend the extra $100 on the chipset.
