I recently got into watch collecting and purchased a seiko 5. It set me back about 150 usd. I know that it is considered entry level in the watch world, but to me even this seems quite expensive. Its not that I can’t afford to spend more on a watch, its just that I think that spending 1000s of dollars on tour wrist isn’t worth it. This hobby can get absurdly expensive as you guys know. How much do you think people should spend on watches?

“It’s not that I can’t afford to spend more” and “I’m still financially dependent on my parents”.

You can’t afford to spend more. Your parents can. Maybe your view will change when you start earning your own money and you can afford it. Maybe not. Nice that you don’t want to waste your parents money though.

I think you spend at the level it remains fun. If you’re spending a lot to the point that you worry about it, you’ve gone too far.

I have a couple of nicer watches that I’ve acquired over (many) years. Every few months I’m likely to acquire something like a homage watch, which tends to be less than $100 but gives me something new to enjoy. Keeps the total cost down, and while I know they’re not the absolute best they work for me. I started with a Seiko 5 too!

Your view on this will change with your life.

If you don’t have money of your own for now, just enjoy your Seiko 5, stay interested in this hobby but forget about collecting.

You will come back to it when you can.

There ate also 10k cars and 3mil cars. For me 5-20k is reasonable for a luxury watch. Obviously this is only for enthusiasts.

As much or as little as you are comfortable with.

As you noted, to some spending £200 on a Seiko is an expensive watch compared to the £20 Casio they wore before, to others that same £200 watch doesn’t even rank as good enough to be a beater watch.

Neither answer is wrong, they just suit different people, different lifestyles and different budgets.

So spend as much or as little as you are willing and able to afford. I know I will never be able to justify Rolex money, but that hasn’t stopped me finding my ideal watches that do fit my budget and I enjoy wearing just the same.

i have 20 odd watches and the most expensive is £400. I wouldnt want to spend more than that on a watch. Im happy with the watches i have and the limit i stick to.

Basically, get what you want, as long as you can afford it and most importantly, because it brings you joy.
