To my mind, anyways. I don’t know that it was ever much better, and even if it was, that doesn’t evince much.
You’ve got the excessively-conservative, reactionary grifters like The Critical Drinker, perpetually outraged by women and gays, provoked by ‘agendas’ of their own construction. You’ve got the bungling objectivist dipshits with their mendaciously fabricated rules and prescripts of what constitutes good cinema, which make up the ceaseless rants full of trivial logical pedantries. You’ve got the corporate slop with silly thumbnails filled with arrows and circles and big blocks of text and the clickbait titles that promise deep secrets to be unearthed but of course nothing of the sort happens. You’ve got the pretentious video-essayist who probably indicates in the title that the video is a video essay, because the overt affectation of the voice and the vague, pseduo-profound arguements made didn’t make that evident enough. And there are your dime-a-dozen reviews by a multitude of Popular channels which also fail to say anything insightful. At least these last 2 aren’t as malicious. This type of stuff that I do not find any value in just plagues my recommended and I’ve been unable to find any good or even great channels and videos, which I do hope exist, beyond Mark Kermode, who I’ve watched for a while and never underwhelmes.
If anybody has objections I would love to hear them, and if anybody has the names of any of these elusive critics, then I would love to hear them.
