I recently got a check for 5k dollars from my grandparents who live in the US and my bank does let me deposit it into my account however it’ll take around 40 days for it to clear plus the bank is gonna take a portion of it as a commission (don’t know how much exactly but the lady that helped me did say it was gonna be a lot considering how much I’m getting) Is there a faster way to get the money into my account? Sales are gonna be done by the time it clears, and I don’t want to bother my grandparents with this since they’re super old now

I don’t have a bank account in the US since I’m not from there so I honestly have no idea what to do besides wait the 40 days.

a check is a non thing in europe , i once received one and tried to cash it but it takes months + a lot of costs and since almost no bank is used to dealing with paper cheques its basically a thing of the past (if it ever was a thing in europe)

bank to bank electronic transfer is cheap, fast , safe etc so maybe send the checque back to your GP’s just to make sure you dont loose 10% in costs and just ask them to do an electronic transfer ?

You can ask them to do a wire transfer. There are some extra steps and international codes but they can go into their US bank for assistance. It will not be hard for them. It should get into your bank account in just a few days. We’ve done wire transfers to Mexico. To get money to my daughter in the UK, we maintain a joint checking account in the US, with just the minimum in it. I transfer money into that account and she transfers it to her Charles Schwab account, which gives her both US and UK access. Goes in as USD and comes out in London as GBP.

I live in the EU but also have a US account. I can photodrop any USD check to my US account and it clears in a few days. Then I just transfer the money to my EU account.

Not happening, I had the same problem with HMRS tax refund from UK being a cheque and eventually I had to give up.

No bank in Netherlands would honour any kinda cheque so I still have 1k Brit pounds that I can’t access.

Does your US bank not offer online check deposits? Through my US bank app I can simply scan the front and back of a check and deposit it. I can also mail the check to my bank and deposit it that way. If your bank doesn’t offer this you should consider opening an account with one that does, because this is a very convenient option to have. I bank with Ally back home and online check deposit has been a lifesaver.
