Hi, I have been thinking about getting a steam deck as I would love to be able to play things like stardew and skyrim with mods without having to buy a computer. I also would love to be able to play the indie games I see on YouTube like scene investigators and other crime ones that never make it to switch. So my question is, would a steam deck be wasted on me? As I’m not a “proper gamer” and know next to nothing about modding games and consoles.
I mean, if you’d use it then it’s not a waste. I’d look up some tutorials on youtube for mod installations on steam deck for some of those games (it can be a little involved), but if it sounds like something you’d actually do then I’d say go for it. I’ve been playing Stardew Valley on mine and it’s great.

as long as you intend to use it, no it wouldnt be a waste
Your first mistake is using the phrase “proper gamer.” What the hell is that anyway? Someone that lives in their parent’s basement, games 20 hours a day and never washes?
A gamer is simply a person that likes to play. You don’t have to know everything about modding and consoles to be a gamer no different than you don’t have to be a automotive engineer to enjoy driving. Would a Steam Deck be wasted on you? Yes, if you are simply unwilling to learn.
If you’re willing to learn how to apply mods and are willing to learn about how Steam Deck works (keep in mind, it’s a portable computer, it’s not a Switch, it’s not a console) then Steam Deck might be good for you and you can get a lot of great gaming out of it.
As long as you enjoy playing games it won’t be a waste. When it comes to skyrim with mods though, be prepared to have a pretty rough experience getting everything set up, especially if you have zero experience with tinkering.
Thank you 😊
Which Deck are you planning to get?
I’d say if you can reasonably play a few hours a week, it’s going to be a nice addition. It’s all about your use case. Given what you mentioned, it would be a nice device for you, given that you use it enough to justify the money.
