Epic Games Store Users Have Grown by 173% in Six Years, But Revenue Only by 1.6%

Epic Games Store Users Have Grown by 173% in Six Years, But Revenue Only by 1.6%The Epic Games Store has seen a strong increase in user numbers over the past six years, reaching an impressive total of 295 million users. A Massive User Base, but Weak Revenue GrowthBetween 2019 and 2022, during the pandemic years, Epic experienced solid revenue growth. Revenue dropped back to pre-COVID levels, creating a double problem: while the number of users increased dramatically, earnings actually decreased (thanks Reddit). This means that the average spending per user (total revenue divided by the number of users) has fallen significantly. In other words, more people are using the store, but they’re spending much less — or not at all. 🖊️️🤖

‘Around Half of Oblivion Remastered Players on PS5 Played For Less Than 15 Hours’: Nostalgia Is Powerful, But Only So Much

However, nostalgia is not as powerful as some may think for engagement, as many players got their fix in about 10 hours before dropping the game. In a new report shared a couple of days ago, Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliot looked at how well Xbox-published games performed on PlayStation 5, starting with Oblivion Remastered. While sales were solid, player engagement wasn’t impressive at all for a massive RPG, as “around half of Oblivion Remastered players on PS5 played for less than 15 hours, showing that most people got their nostalgia fix before meaningfully progressing.” However, there could be a few more reasons why those who purchased Oblivion Remastered on PlayStation 5 did not play for long, besides the lack of new content. With Oblivion Remastered selling reasonably well, regardless of how long players have lost themselves in Cyrodiil, it will be interesting to see how Starfield will fare on the system. 🖊️️🤖

Sony may have blocked 4th largest publisher on PS Store, targeting shovelware PS4/PS5 games

ThiGamesDE, a major publisher of shovelware like The Jumping Spaghetti, no longer appears on the marketplace. The games are inexpensive, duplicate versions of other titles that appeal to trophy hunters. 4 Reviews ← exclude selected types ← exclude selected tagsOne of the most prolific sellers on the PlayStation Store is not a company many gamers would recognize. At the moment, it’s uncertain if Sony took action or ThiGamesDE removed its own listings. The company in question marketed such classics as The Jumping Spaghetti and The Jumping Ice Cube. 🖊️️🤖

Commodore 64 Helps Revive The BBS Days

One of those systems was the Bulletin Board System, or BBS, which would have been a single computer, often in someone’s home, connected to a single phone line. The video by [The Retro Shack] sets up a lot of this history for context, then, towards the end, uses a modern FPGA-based recreation called the Commodore 64 Ultimate to access a BBS called The Old Net, a modern recreation of what these 80s-era BBS systems were like. Once there, users can access mail, share files, and even play a few games. A retro machine like a C64 or Atari is not required either; modern operating systems can access these with the right terminal program, too. A more in-depth guide to the BBS can be found here for those looking to explore, and we’ve also seen other modern BBS systems recently. 🖊️️🤖

Dokimon: Quest Brings Pokémon GBC-Style Gameplay To iOS

If you were ever in doubt as to whether the retro gaming community craves more titles like the GBC Pokémon offerings, then take a look at Dokimon: Quest. This game channels everything we loved about Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, as well as the 8-bit feel of the GBC’s back catalogue, as a whole. Credit: Yanako RPGSSome of you might have played Dokimon: Quest on Steam or even on Nintendo Switch as Doki Monsters: Quest, and now it’s coming to iOS for iPhone users to download and play anytime, anywhere without bringing a console along for the ride. Dokimon: Quest isn’t a ROM hack; it’s a new RPG from Yanako RPGs with a full 15+ hour story and 144 monsters to capture and train up along the way. Fight bad guys, train monsters, save the day - it’s a format you’re very familiar with, but with a twist that adds more RPG features than the standard Pokémon games. 🖊️️🤖

is posed by this cute word processorThe Atari line of 8-bit computers has always been a bit of a chimera to me. ANTIC went further still, using it on Atari hardware to produce their Atari magazine, sending stories to their photo-typesetting service by modem. In fact, I’m doing so right now, typing this very post into PaperClip on the Atari XE. PaperClip on the Atari was a complete machine language rewrite which shared only the name and perhaps general guidance on feature requirements. Whatever the case, Reichmann left Batteries Included in 1987, before any of the expanded PaperClip line had shipped. 🖊️️🤖
