paperk was the site admin, so they probably had the cryptocurrency wallet and of course, the account access at the hosting servers. Given how piracy works, you don’t want either of those things in a lot of hands, so there’s always a problem of finding the right balance between security and stability. For paperk to be forced to leave at the same time that a major infrastructure/hardware overhaul was pending was just terrible timing, but that just goes to show you that paperk and the PtP staff took the site/user security seriously. I’d rather have a secure site that’s more prone to a few serious disruptions than a rock-solid site stability profile with lousy security. That said, it really sucks when security over stability causes major issues like this outage. I’m just grateful that recovery is possible.

above user gets it.
That’s a very accurate summary, thank you.
It’s also not always about trust, it’s also about legal liability as well. Some people are in more personal risk than others (country of origin, family dependencies, etc)
Part of that when handing something off is cutting ties, any prior sysop for any tracker, will try to have clean cut ties. Often in the background are new wallets that don’t mix, new hosting accounts that are not related, new emails, new logins, everything. You don’t want your past to come back to haunt you when your life circumstances can’t bear it. It’s a dangerous game of hot-potato.
So many act like we’re Microsoft with an outage. HOW DARE YOU HAVE AN OUTAGE. But it’s very refreshing that the majority of the users’ get it, are understanding and often sympathetic; as long as they know things are happening.
It’s too soon to give an official update, but our ETA is very likely (still subject to change, but on the optimistic side) to have things going by the end of this coming week. Open to staff and upper classes first to be bug-testing guinea pigs. The pieces are starting to fall in place. The slow tedious useless waiting is nearly over!
