Had an idea for a book and cruised through 16,000 words over the last week. Seems to be not cringe garbage, though so far no one else has seen it.

I’m upgrading the last piece of my desktop of Theseus¹: the hard disk! Old 2TB one stays, but now I got a 10TB one to go alongside it. I got it relatively cheap², predicted to arrive next week.

And oh, I’m drinking some stolen beer. That also makes me smile. Until the owner notices the missing can, and rants about it until I buy her another.

    1. To avoid this problem when naming my computers (my household appliances and electronics have names), I usually change the name based on the CPU. Current machine is called Tiberis.
    2. 1700 reals, or roughly 290 euros. Given 1/3 of the price is from taxes, and hardware can be rather expensive in Brazil, I consider it a win. Plus I can’t exactly rely on my old hard disk any more, so far I saw no signs of failure but the little guy is old, plus I’m predicting electronics to get more expensive in the near future.

10TiB in this economy? in brazil? mad respect. and honestly considering ram prices, a good investment. what is the power draw ? i have always considered that above lets say 2TB, it makes more sense to not buy more dense drives, as price does not go linearly, power draw sure goes linear, but then 1 drive is still 1 drive, it can fail. with 5 drives, 1 can be parity, but still have 8tb usable with some redundancy. SOrry if you did not want questions, i was just curious.

Yup. RAM prices have been soaring, then SSD prices… I’m predicting HDDs will be the next. So I wanted to avoid being left in a situation where my only HDD goes the way of the dodo, and I’m forced to pay premium for a new one.

Specially given I’ve been archiving anime, movies, music, manga, games, and books like a madman. And sharing them across my local network. So I actually need a bit more storage; my current HDD is 50% full.

So, I’ve been looking for a new one for literal months. You know the drill: visit hardware site, “is it cheap yet?”, get disappointed, flush, repeat. The e-shop I got it from is a big shop so it’s safe (…I hope), but not specialised on computer parts, so I think they’re clueless on the actual price of the goods. For contrast I found the same model elsewhere for prices like, R$2200, R$2600, even R$3800 (c’mon, that’s 650 euros!)

Power draw is 5.74W when idle, 9.07W when active. I got this info from the manufacturer’s site, Toshiba; check page 14. I’m a wee bit worried about the noise (the “server” in question is the computer in my bedroom I’m writing this from), but I think it should be fine.

Don’t worry about the questions :D

Since I have given a spoiler of this news, i would not add too much build -

I got an offer letter for a doctorate (funded, the only correct option). It is from a really great school, and really happy.

Also I had some simulation which was stuck for weeks working, and also now done it twice, one a bit more correct then other.

and i found some really cool insect. they all made me feel happy. and the dogs that i do put some food for were as cheerful as usual (they follow me around, can seek me from crowd from fairly far away), they always bring me joy.

I am happy as we speak.
