Maybe I’m trippin’ but it feels like the eyes are wider on the real pic and it sort of conveys more of a “Are you seeing this shit?” Or like a “Really?” Expression, but when I look at each, the eyes are actually wider on the drawn one. Which makes me wonder if we (or at least just me) interpret relative eye sizes differently in cartoons.
Look at the different relative angles between mouth and eyes in each picture. In the real image the angle of the eyes is very similar to the angle of the mouth and therefore the distance between the left eye and left side of mouth is bigger creating a more “shocked” looking expression, like you described it as “Are you seeing this shit?”. While in the drawn image the mouth is more angled therefore the smiling is more pronounced.
How did they manage to draw a face that so intensely shows that feeling of hating yourself while also being brightly pleasant on the surface
Think it’s from this photo?
Interesting how the drawn version conveys the expression more accurately than the real-life one.
You can do a lot more in drawings than with muscles

Interpreting facial emotions is wild. Tiny tiny changes can change the feel so much
Oh shit
That is the face of your self-loathing, pleased to be loathing you.
