    For the sake of argument let us assume a system with infinite resources, an agent with an infinitely long configuration, and a user willing to wait an infinite amount of time: we quickly see that even under ideal conditions this is dumb as hell.

      at least NFTs ended up promoting IPFS, which is actually really neat and the only thing that made NFTs vaguely theoretically not completely fucking pointless.

      Somewhere out in the multiverse is a timeline where all of this shit wasn’t overhyped and tainted by scammers and fascists: Where crypto is only used to make existing digital currencies like the euro more reliable and traceable (rather than just enabling money laundering like it does in our reality), where NFTs… Are used for video game items, i guess? And LLMs just made the text prediction on your phone a bit less shit.

    Next steps:

    1. Database queries become irrelevant. The backend just sends an English sentence to the database engine, which interprets the string with an LLM and returns the data
    2. The backend becomes irrelevant. It’s replaced with an LLM whose initial prompt tells it what to do with the incoming English API requests

    i am still convincing lazy “senior” engs to stop using GET endpoints to do stuff. get to “/db_offline” should not set the fucking db offline.

      I have to wonder if this happens because GET and POST are not super obvious names, like imagine if they were instead READ and WRITE endpoints?
      I don’t think anyone would make the same mistake with the linux filesystem stuff, like you cat /proc/cpuinfo and it erases the information about the processor.

    For the use case of a readonly db that you have 100% data exposure on, for internal use case only, sure, whatever I guess

    IE metrics stuff where its just a big data dump and you wanna query it easily, readonly. IE sales figures or something.

    Fine, thats both an easy app to slap together for the sales team to play with, and fairly harmless.

    Any other use case though and its pretty fucking stupid lol

      But why? In that use case it would be cheaper, easier, quicker, safer to use a series a series of end points then Ai.

      Imagine if you have a sales goal of $10,000 sales per month with a bonus to the sales person for meeting that goal and the Ai just makes up a bunch of sales. Better yet Ai makes up additional sales people to pay the bonus to, which you can’t cause the don’t exist so your records say you gave out more money then you did and now your your accounting ledgers are illegitimate.

        If I were to design this, and I do indeed do stuff like this for a living, I would have the AI only able to compose just the query, but not handle the results, my API itself would actually perform the query and return the results.

        This would ensure the AI cannot “muck up” the results with fake data. Its only job is just to compose the query and confirm it works.

        So I would construct a set of MCP tools it can use to:

        1. Get the schema of the DB so it can compose a query
        2. Test run the same query against the DB
        3. Review the results and confirm its good, and get feedback if there are errors
        4. Once happy, the LLM would invoke a final MCP with the SQL query which the backend would then actually run said query and return those results to the user. If it errors out that same MCP would fire back the error to the LLM, in case it invoked the tool wrong. The user would only get their query returned to them when its valid and works

        Which actually would not be terribly hard to implement, maybe 1 week of work if Im just making an internal “to be used by our own people” type of tool that doesnt have to be super pretty, just a simple dashboard where they punch in their prompt, which then gets put in a queue, and then the get notified when the LLM has finished and returned the results to them, which they can then download as a CSV or some shit.

        Easy peasy and an example of actually using these tools in a sane way.

        I would never have something like this be outward “client” facing public though, this stuff would be reserved for internal use.

          Yup that’s similar what I do sometimes. My general idea was always write a simplified example, prove it works, ask Ai to add in whatever complexity was needed based on my example, prove that works, release for internal use.

        The tl;dr of it is there are ways to engineer this so the LLM doesnt get to “make up” data, the LLMs job is to just compose the query, and then it gets run against the DB and that returns to the user directly, preventing the LLM from just making shit up.

        MCP Tools are powerful as hell for this, and its actually very viable to do.

    Had a developer making a MCP do something similar to this (input to AI to LINQ) and I nearly had an aneurysm. Compiling the output of AI into IL is just as bad as user input.

    So we are going to assume rest api consumers use the api responsibly as opposed to making a ton of additional calls for no reason that an LLM will have to interpret rather than my existing Redis cache? I’m sure an LLM will be far more efficient.

      I mean, it will be vastly more efficient for certain tasks. Like night and day.

      Previously, a DOS attack could hope to exhaust the service’s bandwidth out maybe overwhelm its load balancer. And that needed a large botnet for most services. Now you can run a small-scale attack and exhaust the business’s token budget or (if they don’t have token limits) their operational budget. That’s incomparably more efficient!

      And all of that without needing to wait for exploits; it’s an aspect of normal operation.

      The future is now, old-timer.
