Hey and let me the first, and a happy first, to welcome you to /c/TenForward, a place dedicated to hanging out and talking Trek. Whether you’re theorizing about old tech (or a new season), talking about your favorite class of ship (Crossfield, but are you surprised?) or just wanting to check out some memes, Ten Forward is the place for you.

Ten Forward was founded with the express purpose of providing a calm, relaxing hangout atmosphere where people could talk about all aspects of Trek. A community that was built to be a real community with friends and strangers coming together to help entertain each other and provide a happy place for us all to go. We want this community to be broad enough to encompass all things Trek under one umbrella, whether that be your typical source of memes, some recent news about a new Picard movie in the mix, some really cool fan art you’ve found or just how existentially horrifying the transporters really are.

We do have a set of rules in the sidebar but they’re no more stringent or severe than you would see in any other general subreddit, but we do ask people to be familiar with them and to follow them to the best of their ability. They’re all pretty basic though. Be kind to one another, don’t be bigoted, try to avoid negativity and support people when you can, stick to being on topic (as long as it’s Trek related, you’re good!) and try to tag recent spoilers of anything released within the last 3-ish months.

And who are here to enforce the rules and help provide the community with a framework of what to expect? Well there’s myself of course but also the stellar @negativenull@lemm.ee, the celestial @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world and the out-of-this-world @The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website! And of course we won’t just be moderating but posting as well. And boy do I personally have a backlog from dealing with personal stuff over the past month or so. If you have any issues with something you see, please report it. If you feel that mod action wasn’t particularly fair, reach out to one of us. We’re here to help provide a great experience for everyone across the board.

So welcome to /c/TenForward! And to borrow, and slightly alter, a quote from a man I miss everyday…

Since my customary farewell would appear oddly self-serving, I shall simply say… 🖖 … Have fun.

Is there a reason for this community as opposed to Risa? Is it just another instance to talk about Star Trek, or was there some Risa drama I’m not aware of?

I just noticed Risa doesn’t have an explicit no bigotry rule, so I’m all for a community with one.

Risa came over from reddit initially and the general framework did too. Part of the framework though was “there are no real rules”. Ten Forward has a slightly different moderation philosophy. We believe that clearly defined rules are needed for a relaxed and chill environment and that the rules aren’t shackles but benefit everyone, both the posters and the mods. Without them, you’re not entirely sure what’s okay and what’s not. Ten Forward also has a larger moderation team who are all active both across lemmy and in the community itself.

No drama. Just a difference of opinion on how to run a community.

        (Creator of both Risas here)

“No real rules” worked just fine for years, in practice I enforced the same self-evident conduct boundaries that you have outlined here. If you have to tell someone to be civil and tolerant then that person was going to ignore the rules even if they had been communicated.

But since I stopped modding, the mod there seems to have moved beyond these boundaries without committing to any actual rules. This is totally unsurprising given the way that group of mods runs their communities, so I’m glad to see this place pop up.

For what it’s worth, /r/TenForward was my first choice back on Reddit but it was taken and set private. Feels like we’ve come full circle!

Well, welcome over here buddy. More than happy to pull our favorite Security Officer into the fold. May not be from a Starfleet vessel but by golly you’re one of us.

Also had no idea you were the one who created both Risas. That’s pretty dope! Thank you for providing a great place for so long and for all the hard work you did as a mod <3

    Thanks for this guys!

It’s great to see a new community forming and to start something new with a group of positive people. The old sites and the old names have run their course and this is a breath of much needed fresh air that will give everyone something new to build on.

For us lurkers and newbies, we feel like the lower decks crew members who join in once in a while. But it’s great to have a core group of positive people looking out for us.

I joined Lemmy during the reddit exodus last June and it was a learning experience. It’s frustrating to find your way through something new on your own but in that mess Stamets was a positive force that made it fun. I don’t know people but I do know kindness and that is all I’ve ever received from him. And that is why I’m here.

Thanks guys for everything you do … and thanks for creating this space.

    Ten Forward!

Can I ask how you go about creating a gif like this? I assume you grabbed a captionless version but how did you add the text and put it in different spots for the “right” “right”…?

I’d love to contribute more but have no idea how to make these things! (Hence, most of my posts are in a simple joke c, fakehistoryporn)

No worries, I make clips like this by cutting mp4s from the movies to the length I want with vidcutter, then use ffmpeg on the command line to convert them to gifs, then use gifsicle to combine them if there are multiples (If you’re on windows I’m thinking the gif would be simpler to make?) then use gifntext dot com to add the captions. Each “Right” was a different caption that I placed at different levels. If you get stuck I can help you out

For what it’s worth, I spent a bunch of time last night trying but my gif ended up too big even after using a gif compression site. I’ll look into other ways to compress gifs but this is turning out to be silly complicated! (Which does increase my admiration for all y’all actual gif makers!)

Is it possible to run ffmpeg on your system? When converting from mp4 to gif I set the resolution to 640 (a common phone resolution, you could go with 720 or something else if you want) and the fps to 10, that should reduce the size of your gif dramatically.

                ffmpeg -ss 0 -i source.mp4 -vf “fps=10,scale=640:-1:flags=lanczos,split[s0][s1];[s0]palettegen[p];[s1][p]paletteuse” -loop 0 filename.gif

Otherwise you can send me what you got and I could convert it for you

                  That’s a good question, I’ll give ffmpeg a shot!

One question, in the sample text above part of it got translated to a thumbs down, what follows scale=640 ?

                  Thanks for all your help!

I was so close to doing exactly what you have just done. Thank you for saving me from the inevitable misery. :)

An mashup of r/startrek, risa, and daystrominstitute? Without oppressive moderation? Run by one of Lemmy’s breakout memers? I seldom subscribe to something on sight.

I’ve been watching TOS for the past months and we enjoy looking up trivia about the actors from the 60s.

This is Bruce Mars, just another up and coming actor that was building his career when he suddenly quit everything and became a religious Monk for the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles. Notable for even counseling Elvis Presley.

Risa has a single moderator. We have a large and robust team (edit: I typed in teal for some reason). Risas moderator is barely active on Lemmy and not at all in communities he isn’t a mod in. Our mods are active across lemmy. The most important though is that Risa has no rules which makes it unclear for users and mods what is okay and what isn’t. We have clearly defined rules to give a framework for everyone.

This answer you’ve given a few times now implies that /c/Risa allows bigotry and honestly, I take offense to that. I removed bigoted and uncivil comments the whole time I was modding either Risa under the same “no real rules” framework currently there. Risa has essentially the same rules about civility and tolerance that you have, applied instance wide.

The current problem with Risa isn’t abstract. The lone mod is enforcing unwritten content rules.

I am genuinely sorry though if I offended or upset you. That was not remotely my intention and I didn’t mean to play down your extreme work and how grateful I am for it.

But that’s not Risa disallowing bigotry. That’s you disallowing bigotry. The community itself has no public facing rules against bigotry and never has. You did and I applaud that. It’s a great thing. You deserve all the props for making Risa a great place and clearing all that up. The current mod does not share that same philosophy and has not implemented that part but due to it never being stated to be part of the community, at least to us basic users like in the sidebar or something, then it’s tacitly allowed. Especially when the sidebar explicitly says “no rules, just don’t break the weather control network.” Also just because the instance overall bans it doesn’t mean that the instance steps in. There have been multiple times that something has been reported, left up by the mod on Risa, and then ignored by the admins who specifically used the phrase “we try to leave Risa reports for the Risa mods. Once it’s been handled at that level, we’ll determine whether we want to escalate it to the higher level.”

The core reason that TenForward was created was directly responding to the lack of written rules that are visible for the user. Background rules that the mods are using aren’t clear to users and aren’t helpful to us.

Community rules are absolutely subordinate to instance rules and the instance rules are fully public. Therefore, Risa’s written policy is no bigotry, and it always has been.

Of course that’s the policy. I wouldn’t have volunteered my time and effort to a project that didn’t have that written in stone as a core principle.

Now, if that written policy is going unenforced by mods and admins… well that’s a different story. But I’ll be honest: I find that very hard to believe. I disagree with the content moderation approach endorsed by the admins of that instance, but in my experience they are all tolerant and empathetic individuals.

That’s a very fair point and I’m sorry for not taking that into account overall. I will make sure to keep that in mind.
