Plasma 6 Release Candidate 1 has landed.
We are less than 50 days away from the final version of #Plasma6.
Along with Frameworks 6 and KDE Gear 24.02, the Megarelaease on the 28th of February will be one of the biggest and more complex upgrades in KDE’s history.
One more RC will be released on the 31st of January and then it will be (hopefully) clear sailing until the final release.
IMPORTANT
Please note that release candidates, although often called “sneak peeks”, are still work in progress and must be installed and used with extreme care. They will contain bugs, some of which may still be critical. Do not use this software in production environments. Use for testing only.
Remember can help us bring you more and better Free Software by becoming a supporting member:

Or donating to KDE:
Is there an iso I can download with it already installed? I wanna try it out in a VM
Fedora has KDE 6 in a testing branch I think. Would be good if you’re willing to test it because they’re looking for people to go through user test scenarios.
@Secret300 @kde I think KDE neon has editions for testing KDE software
I completely forgot about neon for a sec haha
dang plasma looking sexy af there
Two more that didn’t make it over from mastodon:
Could you share the wallpaper from the first screenshot? Thanks!
😬 Unfortunately not the official version, no, as that would have to come from the VDG, but take a look here, see if you can find what you need.
Also there are versions of the wallpapers in several sizes in the original topic.

I think it’s just a small screen given how big the font looks
Very excited for this release!
What features are you excited for?
As silly as it sounds, the new taskbar modification pop up. Dragging the taskbar from one side of the screen to another was a point of jank that took away from the polish of the desktop. The floating panel retaining proper proportions upon maximizing windows is also a nice fix.
I think I’m most looking forward to Plasma becoming more polished overall. I like that this release isn’t completely revolutionary like 4 to 5 was. It’s about removing things that don’t work that well and tightening up what does.
looks pretti
Is it possible to install 6 as a separate DE so I can swap between stable and this in my DM?
you cannot install multiple DEs without breaking stuff.
You definitely can. There is no problem on having, say, Plasma, GNOME. XFCE, and so on on the same machine, even on the same partition and switching from one to another from the login menu.
[it is not a good idea to have] different versions of the same DE
This, however, is absolutely correct. The overlapping different versions of libraries and other common software would make things very messy indeed.
@Bro666 well yeah, it is possible to install multiple DEs and it should work just fine. though i wouldn’t really recommend it since the configs will break a lot from the DEs fighting, and you’ll have a lot of redundancy because of the same utilities and apps for different desktops coexisting… not saying it is not possible though, but do it at your own risk

Hm. Yeah, you have to be careful with that. There may be configs with coinciding names. You are right. Be careful @ikidd@lemmy.world ! Do your research.
I read on Mastodon that the tablet support was subpar as of a month ago. Is it still ? see https://mastodon.art/@raghukamath/111566624907293129 There seem to be quite a few regressions linked to Wayland if I understand correctly
That looks really sleek! I always liked how smooth an experience KDE was back when I used it.
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Will it be on SteamOS?
Eventually, I guess. Plasma 5.27 didn’t make it until last November tho, so it’ll take a while.
Will my current plasma 5 themes work or will I need to port them over/find new ones?
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social This looks actually pretty nice! 😮

Yeah nah
It looks just as similar to pretty much any desktop interface of the past 40 years, and openwindows isn’t even the first thing with that design

Agreed, I took it the same exact way. I’m not sure how we were supposed to tell otherwise. Maybe we were supposed to read their mind? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Why?

“one of the biggest and more complex upgrades in KDE’s history”…there was four… and then all of a sudden there was five… it was so confusing and… I think… now it never stops!!! 😣 😫 😭
5 came out… TEN YEARS AGO. I would not call that break neck speed that would give you update whiplash.
