I was just thinking about how most of my favorite newer artists don’t have a greatest hits album, while even many less-than-popular bands and musicians from back in the day have some sort of “best-of” compilation album in their catalogue. This led me to think: is the Greatest Hits album dead? In the era of streaming and playlisting, it’s becoming less and less necessary for artists to come out with a separate release in order for people to get a surface-level rundown of their catalogue, when they can click on an artist’s profile and immediately see their most popular songs and play any song they’d like at any time.

Honestly, I’ve always kind of adored greatest hits and other compilation albums, just because it’s always interesting to see which songs are included and which are not. Plus, there are a few greatest hits albums still stand as the best album listening experience that the artist has in their catalogue.
