Almost a billion dollars in coal revenue comes in, then Adani’s Australian arm pays enormous fees to other parts of the Adani empire overseas: for logistics, services and shipping its own coal. To the ATO, a booming mine becomes a $340 million loss. No profit, no tax. Every year since 2021.

An analyst at the Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research… thinks Adani’s corporate structure is built so it never shows a taxable profit, no matter how much coal leaves the port.

Standing up to Adani isn’t risk-free. Just last year, they took GetUp to court – demanding that we delete articles, shut down websites, and stop our campaigns. All because for years, we’ve stood up and spoken the truth about Adani’s corrupt, climate-wrecking empire. And we’re not going to stop.

Because a company that made almost a billion dollars in Australia selling coal is getting away without funding a single nurse or teacher, while still finding six figures for a political party. The rest of us are left to cover the gap, and to fight each other over who’s to blame for a cost of living crisis we can all feel but can’t quite name.

That’s the opening the far right needs. When people are working harder for less and no one in power will say why, they’ll take the answer that’s offered – and the far right always has one ready: blame your neighbour, blame the newcomer, blame anyone but the corporations quietly walking off with the profits. Every dollar Adani dodges doesn’t just rob a hospital or a school. It chips away at the belief that this country still runs on a fair go – and that belief is the only thing standing between us and their story…

More than 300 corporations turning over $100 million or more paid zero corporate tax last year, structuring themselves so the profits leave Australia and give nothing back.

This is possible because corporations like Adani have spent decades lobbying for a tax system full of loopholes that lets them avoid paying their fair share. It’s time Treasurer Jim Chalmers used his power to change that.
