    I think you might be misunderstanding. The word jay was first used on drivers driving wrong, but then the usage expanded to pedestrians too to describe people walking wrong.

      The quote literally has a newspaper article from 1909 talking about jay walkers. Jaywalking may have been boosted by the auto industry but it wasn’t invented by them.
