it wasn’t really a big deal as it was greatly overshadowed by the new coke debut which was around the same time. it got totally lost in the noise and part of me thinks that was by design–that part of new coke’s goal was to facilitate the change in sweetener. the ‘classic’ coke that emerged from the aftermath never did contain only sugar. the ‘original formula’ tagline on packaging and in adverts was a total lie.

I’m almost positive it was for this very reason that “new coke” was introduced, regardless of all the pundits denying it.
No idiot would think, despite taste tests, that switching to taste like Pepsi would be a good marketing move.
