4.7 Gigs of RAM for about $5…so cheap right now
The way the prices are developing, at some point you will be more likely to be able to afford a RAM truck than enough RAM for a decent PC…
If you’re talking about some heap of rust with one tire already in the scrapyard versus 128GB of very high-end gaming RAM, we’re probably already there.
Is there a significance to the RAM part of the name or did they just need to differentiate from DVD-ROM? CD-RW is basically the same thing, right?
I think it was because people new the terms Read Only Memory and Random Access Memory, so they just grabbed RAM as a buzz word. DVD/CD-RW makes more sense really. Unless they were trying to bring attention to competition of tape storage being sequential access while DVD could be Random Access.
They were optimised to offer RAM capabilities. Much higher rewrite ceiling, write verification in hardware, no finalisation required etc.
Discontinued in 2019.
Now I want to set up a Linux install with a rewritable DVD drive utilized as a swap partition. It would be slow as fuck, but you could actually use DVD-RAM as RAM.
DVD RAM had finite writes. They claimed you could get “as many as 100,000 rewrite cycles”. It would work for a little while as a swap, but would fail pretty soon.
Right, so you’re saying we need to setup our RAM with RAID to write to multiple DVDs and be able to recover when one fails while you’re hot-swapping another DVD into bay 4.
I mean, with striping, we’d have basically any amount of RAM we want! There’s basically no downsides!
It’d actually be cute because most drives have an eject functionality, so you’d be running your machine and suddenly a disk would just pop out of it as if the computer was saying “ugh gross, this one sucks, please get me a new one!”
Good thing they’re cheap and easy to replace!
