Also how is this movie doing so well? I feel like it’s only popular because it has Nolan’s name on it and stars a bunch of A-list celebrities. But the film itself was mid as fuck. I fell asleep in the theater two hours into it.
Was it even close to the books? IDK never read them. (Also, that poor giant cyclops didn’t deserve to lose his eye. They could have just snuck away while it slept.)
I haven’t seen the movie yet but the cyclops losing its eye was definitely in the poem and kinda important to the plot.
If you actually want to read it at some point, try Emily Wilson’s translation, it’s said to be one of, if not the most readable version because it doesn’t force fake olden English on you and uses a rhythm scheme that reads better in the English language. And she’s now translated Iliad too.
Well if it was important to the plot, then that only futher goes to show how bad the film was, because they didn’t make that apparent at all. In the film, after the giant passes out the exit is left wide open for them to simply sneak away. But instead they form a bizarre plan to wake him up and piss him off by stabbing him in the eyeball, just so they have a reason to run for their lives and learn that it speaks English. It made no god damn sense at all.
Thank you for your suggestion. I hate when old literature is translated by pompous pricks just to make it more difficult to read for the sake of it, so I will definitely check out Emily Wilson’s version.
