Just times out.
I found the admin’s most recent comments and found this thread
It was a mistaken post removal and they’ve been busy. It’s possible that @Sal@mander.xyz has not noticed the instance is down yet.
I have been neglecting the instance very aggressively due to being busy this summer.
And on the subject of getting more admins/moderators:
Yes, of course! Moderators are gold. I need to make a better effort at recruiting.
I suppose sooner or later (end of the month maybe?) mander will be back up, until then I’ll be using my alts.
They’ve been down for 2 days now, I had an account there and I was wondering what happened, but aside from this post, I couldn’t find anything. I hope they get back online.
If there’s no news in the next week or two, I’m gonna be looking to spin up a successor based on the same principles. Mander.xyz is my favorite part of the fediverse by a mile, and the spirit is worth keeping alive.
If anyone reading this has sysadmin experience and is willing to help out, I’d love to make it a joint project; feel free to shoot me a DM.
To do that well, the post history should be reconstructed. A couple large nodes would possibly be subscribed to every mander community, so they would have a history of posts and comments which could then be reconstructed. Sadly, I think the software to do that does not exist:

As old as Lemmy is now, it’s really a shame there is no backup tool.
The mander community list and descriptions are available in lemmyverse. Unfortunately the descriptions are truncated despite someone’s request a year ago: https://lemmy.tgxn.net/post/5663028
From Sal on matrix:
From what I can find, the managing director of the company that runs serverspace.io (ITGLOBAL.COM NL), which is the company that rents me the VPS space, was arrested by Dutch authorities. The infrastructure in Amsterdam was disconnected without warning when this happened. Since my latest database backup is unfortunately not very recent, and because there is still hope that the severs will come back up, I am waiting and hoping that I regain access to the data. They originally published some somewhat optimistic message, but as of today their website is inaccessible.

I could not find any statements from Dutch police or really any source other than IT Global themselves. But, this event may be related to “Dmitry Gachko” (owner of ITGlobalcom Rus) being added to this sanctions list: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dec/2024/1484/2026-07-13
I recieved no warning, and I did not know about the ownership structure of serverspace and did not consider that the infrastructure was exposed to this risk. I figured “VPS in Amsterdam from a Dutch company” was rather safe. But “Dutch company operating in NL” does not mean the same as Dutch owned…
Any newer news from Sal? Alternatively, could you get me in touch with them there? Thank you.
The info I posted was lifted from this comment.
I hope not, I was going to make another post to !ecospheres@mander.xyz soon
Here’s a recent post from mander https://retrolemmy.com/post/43323195 so they must’ve just went down recently, maybe it’s temporary
This makes me realise it would be useful to know the admin’s handle of instances while they are offline. In principle, would be good if the Lemmyverse scraper bot would grab that so it’s in the public dataset.
(update) request made
Still down :/
Still down, and the fossilesque account that was one of the most prolific posters appears to be deleted.
How would you know if it’s deleted, if the server is down?
I’m still not entirely sure how all the coding about the federation works, but if you try viewing a different mander account through your own instance (eg https://programming.dev/u/Sal@mander.xyz) you can still see the account, whereas the fossilesque page says deleted.
Oh, that’s disheartening.
Does it actually say deleted? Since my instance does not have a cached copy of Sal’s profile it shows an error when I try to view his.

You can check through other instances if you’re curious. Like I said I don’t know much about fedi coding but when a user (or post) is gone on .zip and others I’ve seen it doesn’t say deleted it just gives an error page. Sal’s page is still visible but there’s an error for fossilesque.

https://programming.dev/u/fossilesque@mander.xyzHowever the old posts that she started are still around. I think that points toward her acct being gone because if she’d deleted the posts themselves they wouldn’t be accessible. Here’s one through my instance (I think it’s one of the last ones she posted in science memes):
I know this is a little old, but I had honestly been a bit worried about fossilesque awhile back when I noticed the pinned posts from science_memes were gone and fossilesque was no longer the moderator. Then noticed the weird stuff with the accounts, but was just hoping it was an intentional disappearing act to be in the outside world.
I know it’s really none of my business, but she was such positive influence around here, and I’m wishing her the best.
Yeah I think I’d noticed she’d stopped posting as well. I think I vaguely recall she said something about finishing a dissertation (maybe?) so hopefully she just got busy with life.
All of those are dead links from slrpnk.
Did you try in a new browser or incognito window? They even work when I open them through my phone’s browsers, which definitely didn’t have any cached copies.
Nothing yet 😔
I hope they bring it back, I really miss it.
