I personally made some fairly deep calculations a couple of years back, because people claimed that coal powered electricity would mean an EV polluted more than an ICE.
But that is not entirely true, even on coal, the EV pollutes clearly less on CO2, but slightly more on particles.
IDK if USA has places that are 100% coal powered electricity, but any degree of renewable or Nuclear would tilt the balance even more towards the EV being by far the more environmentally friendly car. If surplus heat from coal power plant is reused either for heating houses or for industry, there is simply no competition. The ICE car loses on every count.I also considered the production and scrapping of the battery, and even a few years ago the balance remained clearly on the side of the EV, because batteries are often reusable beyond the lifetime of the car, and can be broken down to make new batteries. So never anywhere near as bad as some alarmists claimed.
With new types of batteries that again shifts the balance towards EV as more environmental option even more.In short my own calculations support the conclusion of the article. With the article showing better numbers than mine, but it is also a newer calculation based on better batteries.
PS:
My calculation back then even included distribution of gaz compared to the distribution of electricity. Fun times. 😋They’re.atill cans ffa. No one ahold be advoxatong…Eve. The IPCC states we have to mobe away from cans
but also makes clear that simply replacing gasoline with batteries won’t be enough: cities must also dramatically curtail the use of automobiles and avoid “locking in” future emissions with more car-dependent infrastructure.

“Only by curbing all motorized transport, particularly private cars, as quickly as possibly can we tackle the climate and air pollution crises”
We’re already building GWs of new coal to make ecars
