How to delete a controller from Steam?

I was using an Xbox controller and switched to a PS4 controller. Now on 2 player games Steam loads the Xbox controller as player 1 and the PS4 controller as player 2, even though the Xbox controller is not plugged in, making the games unplayable. How do I make Steam forget the Xbox controller ever existed?
