In May 2013, in what was seen as a major development,[66] Stephen Hawking joined the academic boycott of Israel by reversing his decision to participate in the Jerusalem-based Israeli Presidential Conference hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres. Hawking approved a published statement from the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine that described his decision as independent, “based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts there”.
