My city: we’re sustainable eco friendly green city!
Me: so can we have more priority on public transport? What about tram? What about bike friendly road development?
My city:
My european city of 1mill pop has execellent public transport and trams powered by renewables. But it’s still car dominated, people still choose to drive everywhere and demand they park within 20m of their destination.
Honestly the choice needs to be taken away for those capable of using their own legs.
“Can we install bike lanes?” / “WoN’t YoU ThiNk Of ThE ChiLdRen?!”
We can’t have cyclists on the road or the sidewalk, they could hit someone. Good thing drivers never do that though. Hitting people is illegal, so they can’t do it.
“These cyclist are a menace and is endangering other road user!” -literally every car driver that drive over speed limit
“I’m a law-abiding citizen, I’d never do anything dangerous.”
“Okay, how fast were you driving just now?”
“I’m pretty sure I was below 10 above the speed limit.”
The children yearn for the coal mines
Give me mixed use zoning! Give me businesses in walking distance! Give me my fucking public transit!!!
I know, let’s hold an event with an inspirational speech and a buffet.
City: Can we have bike lanes
Province: No, and we legislate that if any bikers die then they can’t sue us
The city I’m in has gone crazy putting in bike lanes. Never seen a bike on it.
It’s necessary to do more than just put in bike lanes to make for a bike-friendly city.
Are they protected bike lanes, or a line on the normal street that cars swerve through to turn and park
Protected. But with plastic things that I could easily take out if I felt like it.
That wouldn’t feel safe to me, I’d probably illegally use the sidewalk just to not get grey hairs for riding a bicycle.
That said, it does take time. I’ve started seeing people use bike lanes here after over a year of them being marked and barricaded
Start using them yourself and you would see a lot of other bikers too.
This. I never saw more cyclists than when I was riding my bike to and from work. When you’re in a car you either don’t take note of them (not that you don’t notice them, but that they’re just an extra thing to not hit and then wiped from memory once passed) or you’re just not out long enough to see them.
What might be happening is that an equivalent number of people using bike lanes and cars results in a much smaller impact and apparent usage on bike lanes.
