I’m 6’5’’ (196cm) tall and most of my height is in my legs. I wouldn’t say I’m “extremely” tall, as the standard height of a door is exactly 6’6’’ in the UK (200cm), luckily for me. So usually, my height is not an issue.

However, in recent times, I’ve noticed the seats on airplanes starting to close in on me super hard. To the point that on one flight I physically could not get into the seat (Delta Airlines). When the airline attendant came, and she said I needed to tuck my legs in, I jokingly retorted “If you can get my legs in behind this chair I’d love that, because I physically can’t get them in.” and then I joked “This is your chance to manhandle my legs if you like, I think they quite nice”. She started laughing and said “We’ll get this figured out”.

I ended up sitting with the crew for that flight! They were a good laugh though, they lamented that Delta had just recently closed the seats in by 2’’ and so they had a couple of other tall men unable to get into their seat on other flights.

But, the story aside, the issue of not being able to get into the seat I paid for is certainly starting to infuriate.

Some say, if you need more legroom you should pay for legroom. But why should I have to pay extra because I was born tall? Surely if I pay for a seat, I should get a seat I can fit in. Imagine if you paid for a seat and then it turned out to be child-sized, then were told you’d need to pay extra for an “adult” sized seat.

Urgh!
