I’ve come to realize how much of my own mental health issues stem from being raised by a mother who dealt with sexism and misogyny her whole life. Her trauma directly affected my mental health. I’m a man. This is why feminism is good for everyone. Imagine if your mother never experienced sexism, abuse, misogyny, how much better it would be for everyone.

I am a lady and my mom shows her internalized misogyny more and more as I get older, especially in regards to marriage. I hate when I vent to her about my husband and she just says, “welcome to marriage, baby girl” like the fact he won’t do dishes is a sex-based issue and not an entitlement issue. I always remind her that this is not the 1970s when she got married, it is the year of our lord 2023 and she deserved better back then and I deserve better now.

Nothing drives me crazier than people who are totally unaware of their biases, or at least the fact that they are biased. We are all, but there’s a difference between people who can admit and work on that, and people that knee jerk regurgitate societal bullshit.

You are correct. You deserve better. Don’t give up on your mom though. Challenge her, it’s okay if it gets heated, as long as you always give her another chance, and she to you (aka love each other). Trust yourself.
