Another week in the books. Let’s chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

I am hopelessly behind on stuff now with Comick shutting down unexpectedly. I still have 100+ series to migrate off of it. Also, most of the series I am migrating away from Comick seem like mangadex is the most up to date on them. I wish there was somewhere else as I just don’t feel like it is too secure these days that those series won’t just disappear like the recent purge.

Same here. In the end, right now I am mostly reading manwha on the site that rhymes with Dorothy’s dog.

Honestly ,I feel worse now than when the purge hit MangaDex.

I wanna start off by saying: every time I posted here over the last few weeks it was a ghost town. Every time I didn’t, other people posted instead - I can’t win! (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

Didn’t have much time to read to be honest so I was mostly catching up on the stuff from the last two weeks or so. Now that Comick is down I should probably start migrating my library but I kinda don’t want to - it’s too much hassle. Well, that and some series weren’t updated anywhere else so I’ll have to wait and see where the wind blows next.

I’ll get to it when I get to it, I guess. I have some other reading to do for a project anyway.

Yeah…I have hardly had a chance to read much if I am honest. With aggregators shutting down and series getting removed, most of what I had been reading is just sitting in my library right now without any updates. The main things I have managed to keep up with are the ones with official releases that I can follow (VIZ, Manga Plus, etc.).

I should probably start migrating my library but I kinda don’t want to

This is me for a lot of my series, lol. I envision having a lot fewer series I am following in the future than what I have been in the past.

I think it’s just kinda hard for me to discuss manga in these threads, and I finally figured out why. There are two categories of things I read: currently serializing manga that I’m keeping up with, and stuff I’m “binging”. The currently serializing stuff is weird to talk about because everyone reads such a wide range of manga to read that there’s decent odds nobody will have the context to know what I’m talking about. The stuff I’m “binging” is a little better, but I have to put that in quotes because I’m reading that section in Japanese so I usually don’t go much faster than 1-2 volumes a week. Right now that would be Kaguya-sama: Love is War. It’s been great! There are lots of really cool puns! Definitely worth re-reading in the original language! I’ll bring it up again in checks notes about 2-3 months when I finally finish!

Yeah, I agree with you. I have had a hard time populating these threads lately as well. I used to try to check out a couple new series each week to give a bit of a pitch or warning about in these threads. However, with all the DMCA stuff at mangadex (and now comick) and my irl work picking up, I just haven’t had as much of an opportunity to do so. A lot of what I read regularly already gets posted…so I don’t have much else to post in these threads right now.

Not new, but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You - myanimelist

I find it particularly… Relaxing? Enjoyable?

I’d already been up to date but recently bought physical copies (volume 1-5) & reread it. Yesterday I saw chapter 53 floating around online.

Also, apparently it will have an anime adaption, so that’s exciting too!

I kind of fell off reading this series a while back (I don’t remember why tbh), but I agree that it is a great vibe. I am looking forward to the anime as well.

After recently being reminded of Blame! I wanted to read more from it’s author Tsutomu Nihei. I did not expect that everything he touches would turn gold like Blame! did and was correct in that that assumption. I liked some of his other work namely the Knights of Sidonia anime based on his manga and really liked Tower Dungeon though this ones still ongoing.

    • First I read Aposimz. I could take it or leave it. It’s very similar to Blame! in the setting and pacing but has a greater emphasis on the story and characters. While the setting is very cool and I enjoyed it, I never felt connected to any of the characters. Which is sad since the story is mostly told through dialogue between them.
    • Secondly I read Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. I enjoyed my time with this one. The setting is more nature focused here but the story is still about a mega structure. It works well and reminded me of Ghiblis Nasciaä of the Valley of the Wind. My biggest problem with it is that it never manages to build any tension. It kind of feels like the manga is being pulled in two different directions in that the characters and story feel very shounen but the setting is seinen. But overall its good.
    • Thirdly I read NOiSE. It’s very short. Nothing much to say about this one other than it’s more Blame!. +rec

The world of Kaina sounds fascinating to me. It had an anime adaptation a while back and I put it on my list to watch when I have time…and then just haven’t had time. Thanks for the reviews!

Do you all use any apps when reading manga? I’m on iOS and mainly stick to websites (RIP Mangadex and Comick) in my browser.

    (I use Orion with UBlock+)

Agree with Kadath that most people here are probably using some descendant of Tachiyomi on Android (Mihon is the current name of the most direct descendant, but there are plenty of forks). Some services probably have official apps (VIZ, Manga Plus I am guessing). I know a popular option with mangadex (which is still the best source for a lot of series) is to install and use it as a PWA.

Yeah, I used MangaDex PWA to read a fair amount of licenses series, so them being pulled of that was a major bummer.

I still read some on MangaDex, but not as many and mainly use it as a list of series I plan to read.
