Hi everyone, I am small homelab enthusiast, my current setup is 2 older laptops(one is a gaming laptop so it has some power), and a external NAS in a server rack. This past week my NAS failed and I’m going to use this as a chance to change things potentially. I don’t have a huge budget sub ($300) but I don’t mind buying used.

I am thinking of running proxmox with the usual set of tools people run on here (pihole, Plex, etc)

So my question is should I get an older Dell power edge server (I found some on eBay for example a r720 server 2x xeon e5-2640)

Or should I just get an external USB 3.0 drive hook it in to the gaming laptop and use proxmox on that?

I know this is a bit of a it’s your choice question but I am looking for opinions.

Thanks!
