Welcome here! Here are a few pointers to get you started
If anyone’s wondering what you should do first, the first thing you should do is block hexbear, and the next thing you should do is join any instance other than lemmy.ml. lemmy.world is a good choice, but there’s probably one you’ll like better.
If you want to know the most trans-friendly instance, it’s lemmy.blahaj.zone. There are people who will tell you it’s Hexbear. Those people are liars.
There is also a 196 community here on world, and a third community on blahaj, because the original mods are a little cray cray.
Enforcement without exception of a rule that was created to protect a marginalized group is not “cray cray”, nevermind the use of ableist language there.
The 196 on world is the original mods, who were unhappy with Ada’s enforcement of the rules on her server which she owns and decided that because of this they would migrate their community without consulting their members to .world, an instance which is known in the wider community to have moderation issues such as unfair or inconsistent application of rules (see /c/yepowertrippinbastards on Lemmy.dbzer0 for examples).
The now 2 other 196 comms on blahaj are comprised of the original community’s members, now fractured into two groups. /C/onehundredninetysix was made while /c/196 was still privated by the original moderators.

I saw a mention of Lemmy on a random thread in r/politics so I’m tentatively having a poke about, since I’ve already tried to quit Reddit once (for Tumblr - it didn’t stick). I remember forums pre centralised internet, is it something like that?
Think of it more like email addresses. Know how a Gmail account can send email to an iCloud account just fine, and both display the same content? Same basic concept. You can have [account]@domain1.com and [account]@domain2.com, and they’re entirely separate accounts. Even if they have the same username, they’re on different instances.
Federation refers to how the instances share data with each other. One of the largest things to look for is what instances your instance federates with, because that will determine what kinds of users you end up interacting with.

Yes, you can consider it like a web forum but with the default sort set to “new post” not “new comment” as is done on Reddit. This tends to favour new content over longer discussion, although you’ll get active threads like this quite often.

Ah, thank you! I downloaded an app first, since I primarily use my phone for everything and apps are just easier. I think the one I’m using is called Boost? It is less confusing than I was worried it might be :)

We’ve definitely seen an upswing in registrations this week, we usually have 1 a day and we are already on 8 today.
Id like to point out there are also some really good mobile apps for lemmy. I use sync for lemmy. Hopefully others will recommend there favorites. There are quite a few good ones!

I came from the first reddit exodus and it’s been great over here. You’ll get used to it in no time, I promise.
So did I but be careful or you well also get swept up by the brainwashing here, buying a Pixel to run grapheneos, installing Linux on everything, buy privacy respecting email services, VPN and paranoid of everything. BTW I use NixOS and I am still mostly sane.
Its true, this place is a fucked up linux echo chamber. After joining and after a lot of tests turns out distros like fedora and mint are literally what people want from steamOS.

I use a Pixel 7 (with GraphineOS) and a Librebooted Thinkpad T440p with Arch btw, also I use MullvadVPN and encrypted communication whenever possible.
I don’t own a smartphone thank you, so I won’t be getting a pixel. Already been running Linux for 15 years or so now.

Just recommend the biggest instance that isn’t federated with them. Anyone got a list?
I do think it’s valuable to recommend the bigger instances. If they’re on a big instance, they don’t have to worry about federation at all at first. It takes no effort to slowly learn about federation, and later they have the option to move to a smaller instance.

Yeah, I originally joined Lemmy during the first Reddit exodus. Then, I squirreled and did not spend the necessary time to learn much about it. However, this go around I’m here and I’m serious about learning it and using Reddit much much less (in hopes to abandoning it eventually).
Some folks helped me to find apps. I’m using Avelon and I really like it. It makes figuring Lemmy out MUCH EASIER than simply bookmarking.

The reason I push people to Lemmy.World is that you mostly don’t need to learn anything about federation. It’s obvious enough over time what the @ symbols are, and you basically pick it up through osmosis.
If you start on a really small instance, your people might not subscribe to many foreign communities. If nobody subscribes to a foreign community, it doesn’t get pulled over and doesn’t show up in ALL. That can make Lemmy look pretty barren, and you have to go out and find communities (somehow) on your own.
If you start at Lemmy.World, the all tab just works. The local tab is even a fine experience, though I wouldn’t use it here. Similar arguments with lemmy.ca and sopuli.xyz for Canada and Europe. Their all tabs might be slightly worse, but for those people the local tab should be better (actually more local), balancing it out.

You are aware that with 1140 and 496 monthly active users, and the use of https://lemmy-federate.com/, the All tab on those instances, as well as any other instance with more than 100 monthly active is going to be the same than on LW, right?
This used to be true a while ago, but any instance in the top 20 (https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy/ ) is going to give the same All feed.

In EVE Online we refer to this as the Brave Newbies area, the biggest, zergiest group where you don’t need to know what you’re doing. It functions as a training ground and feeder group for the more elite groups.

I agree sopuli is great for Europe and lemmy.ca is great for Canada. sh.itjust.works is also reasonable. But people looking for general social media will have the easiest time on Lemmy.World that is the most similar to the centralized experience that they’re used to.
If you want people to actually give Lemmy a fair shot, and don’t have a specific reason to guide them elsewhere, I think it’s wise to point them to .world. They can always leave later, after they’re more familiar with federation and Lemmy.
Lemmy.world is on 0.19.3, so they are missing the following features (https://lemmy.ml/c/announcements for the details)
- Post hiding
- List of all media they previously updated and ability to delete those
- Change the vote display mode, allowing them to show or hide up and downvotes
- Quickly show the modlog of a user

It actually is true that it takes time to find your way around the fediverse. But that’s also kind of nice because it means there’s always cool new communities to find. A lot of my current favorite communities are ones I didn’t find until after being here for over a year.
I should take the time to make a list of some of the hidden gems and sticky it somewhere.

An article titled “Decentralized Social Media Is the Only Alternative to the Tech Oligarchy” hit the front page of r/technology and the top comment mentioned lemmy as a reddit alternative. Although the comment was removed when the OP later edited it to include a direct link to join-lemmy.org. Which probably indicates those mods have automod configured to automatically remove links to that site. But the good news is, it still got a lot of attention. It’ll be interesting to see if any instance admins will be able to verify an uptick in account registrations over the next few days.
