I think the public felt fooled because nobody died except for Ali MacGraw (a mixed blessing) and she wasn’t even a regular presence on the show. Some thought the show killed off Alexis because Joan Collins didn’t do the first episode as protest for not getting a raise.
I think other issues hurt the show like the spin-off, The Colbys, which diluted the show’s interest. They also fired Catherine Oxenberg who was a fan favorite and replaced her with the very American Karen Cellini (Gone Tomorrow).
