I found several threads here about autistic people’s favorite games. Among them are games with a lot of text and characters like BG3, and games with huge maps and labyrinths like Hollow Knight, and open-world games with complex mechanics that you need to remember like Skyrim or Horizon…

Am I the only one who can’t play these games? I’m overwhelmed by the large number of dialogues, rules, interfaces - I get a migraine; I get confused by non-linear maps and just get frustrated. And if there are side quests in a game, I just skip them, just to get through the main story faster, otherwise I lack positive reinforcement, I feel like I’m wasting my time.

That’s why I often play older, linear games. The kind where you’re always shown where to go and what to do. Where you can run, jump, shoot, and just win. Without stupid cut scenes for half an hour that eat up your resources with empty chatter.

Or narrative-driven indie games like Journey… I also love classic 3D platformers like Crash, Spyro, Kao, and so on. And racing games of course. For everything else, I need a lot of resources and a whole free day in reserve.

Aren’t you really overwhelmed by modern games?

I love Final Fantasy 13 for this exact reason. It is very calming to me, not having to make constant choices of where to go first, or which wall to follow.
