It’s expensive when you don’t have any skills to have a career that can afford the cost of living. Even if he found a way to scrap together the money needed for a nicer place to rent, no landlord will rent to him because he likely can’t demonstrate consistent, regular income for the rent price. So the best he can do is a dilapidated studio with an outhouse.
