Hi guys,

I’m building my first NAS and I was looking for HDD options. I was looking for buying a used HDD from eBay but I read some posts here recommending avoiding that.

I did some research on Amazon and I have found some interesting offers like this one here

https://www.amazon.ca/Ultrastar-HUS724040ALA640-0F14688-Internal-Enterprise/dp/B0859NQ1RV/ref=sr_1_3?crid=KG18JEJBFMFQ&keywords=hard+drive&qid=1699444106&sprefix=hard+%2Cspecialty-aps%2C83&sr=8-3&srs=17351028011

A 4TB HDD from HGST with a 5 Years of warranty, is it a good deal to go with?

The warranty is only as good as the company offering it. In this case it would be offered by the seller, Evrymm, which sounds like one of those generic Chinese spam selling accounts. You may actually get the disk, but I wouldn’t count on getting a replacement under any kind of warranty except for the 90 day Amazon one.

Only reinforcing the first comment here, one of the very few seller reviews where things didn’t work out is “Drive failed after a day of use. Amazon support refused to give contact for seller. So much for “5 year warranty by reseller”.”

If you look the seller up on US Amazon they’re apparently operating out of a 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath house in a california suburb, which is also 100% totally not suspicious.

An ebay store front is not necessarily problematic, the established favourites like ServerPartDeals or GoHardDrive both have their own sites and ebay/amazon pages. Just don’t buy from unknown randos and expect them to honour a warranty.

Just read the reviews. 75% positive isn’t exactly great and the 4th review down seems to suggest the 5 year warranty is worth sod all:

Works well so far. Glad to have the instruction about formatting and finding it on your system.

I recently bought an 8TB drive with a 1yr warranty from Amazon Renewed (Amazon US), was impressed when it arrived and plumped for a 10TB with the 5 year warranty, again Amazon renewed (Amazon US). I try to avoid all 3rd party sellers on Amazon where I can as it simplifies things.
